In a first, Bangladesh name two concussion subs in one day

While there was a like-for-like swap, the choice to use Mehidy Hasan in place of Liton Das raised eyebrows

Mohammad Isam in Kolkata22-Nov-2019Bangladesh had to use two concussion substitutes after Liton Das and Nayeem Hasan were both hit on the helmet by Mohammed Shami. The visitors’ choice of replacements, though, put their planning for this series in poor light, as they had no specialist batsmen in reserve despite two batsmen in the original squad going unavailable well before the start of this match.ICC Playing Conditions

1.2.8.1 In assessing whether the nominated Concussion Replacement should be considered a like-for-like player, the ICC Match Referee should consider the likely role the concussed player would have played during the remainder of the match, and the normal role that would be performed by the nominated Concussion Replacement.
1.2.8.2 If the ICC Match Referee believes that the inclusion of the nominated Concussion Replacement, when performing their normal role, would excessively advantage their team, the Match Referee may impose such conditions upon the identity and involvement of the Concussion Replacement as he/she sees fit, in line with the overriding objective of facilitating a like-for-like replacement for the concussed player.

While there was one bowler-for-bowler swap with Taijul Islam taking Nayeem’s place, Mehidy Hasan, a specialist spinner, took over from Liton, a wicketkeeper-batsman. That means he cannot bowl in the game. As per the ICC playing conditions, a concussion substitute has to be a like-for-like replacement and perform the same role as that of the concussed player. Both Liton and Nayeem went to the hospital for scans, where concussions were confirmed. “Both players have been diagnosed with delayed onset of concussion by the medical team after being struck on the helmet while batting,” a BCB statement said. “Consequently their symptoms have ruled them out of the rest of the Test Match and they have been substituted with Mehidy Hassan Miraz and Taijul Islam respectively. They will now follow their concussion recovery protocol to ensure their safe recovery.”*It is unclear why the BCB didn’t call in replacements much earlier, considering both Saif Hassan and Mosaddek Hossain were ruled out long before day one of the Eden Gardens Test.Saif’s injury was confirmed on November 20, two days before the game, and although there are 30-minute flights between Dhaka and Kolkata, no one was was flown in. Mosaddek, meanwhile, had left the Test squad on November 11, even before the first Test, to be with an ailing family member, but the BCB didn’t name a replacement then either. This, in a squad missing Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal.Liton was hit on the helmet by a Shami bouncer in the 20th over of Bangladesh’s innings. He decided to bat on, struck two more fours, but walked off seven balls after the injury. Nayeem was hit off the third ball he faced and he too continued batting, whacking Shami for four boundaries before he lost his off stump to Ishant Sharma after making 19 runs. The concussion-sub rule came into effect in time for the Ashes earlier this year and since then it has been used five times in men’s Test cricket and India have been involved in four of them.In August, Steven Smith was replaced by Marnus Labuschagne after being hit by Jofra Archer. A few days later, in the Caribbean, Darren Bravo took a blow from Jasprit Bumrah and Jermaine Blackwood took his place. In October, Dean Elgar found himself in trouble after being struck by Umesh Yadav, which brought Theunis de Bruyn into the game. There is potentially a sixth instance on the cards with New Zealand’s Tom Blundell being on standby for Henry Nicholls, currently playing a Test against England.*This copy was updated at 5pm GMT with the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s official statement on the concussions.

Tottenham in front row for £26m forward likened to Salah after contact made

Tottenham are reportedly in the "front row" to sign a "devastating" forward likened to Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, as Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou and the wider recruitment team look at attacking upgrades.

Spurs looking to sign clinical new attacker this summer

As now backed by reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the north Londoners are looking to sign a clinical new wide forward, and one who could inject more goals and assists into the side.

As per Romano, the likes of Wolves winger Pedro Neto and Barcelona forward Raphinha feature among technical director Johan Lange's list of potential summer targets, as they seek an exciting player of that mould to come in and add that extra bit of flair.

"Look, a player they appreciate for a long time is Raphinha from Barcelona. We know the financial situation at Barcelona is not easy, so he could be one of the names. They will look at that kind of player," said Romano on JD Football.

"Another player they appreciate is Pedro Neto, but he has this issue with his injuries, so I’m not sure Liverpool, Tottenham or the other clubs following the player will be prepared to play big money for Pedro Neto this summer. That kind of player is the priority for Tottenham, I see them going for that kind of winger, a quality player to help with goals and assists."

Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams is thought to be attracting Tottenham's interest, but he will cost around £43 million, the value of his release clause, to prise away from La Liga.

As Spurs also seek to bring in a new centre-back, as confirmed by Postecoglou himself, it may be prudent for the north Londoners to fish for potentially low-cost attacking options as well as bigger names.

A player who fits this mould is Genoa star Albert Gudmundsson. Lange and Tottenham chiefs are thought to have made contact over Gudmundsson already, but they aren't the only ones, with Serie A giants Inter Milan also interested (La Gazzetta dello Sport via Sport Witness)

He's bagged a brilliant 10 goals and three assists over 27 league appearances this term, with a report by Calciomercato (translated by Sport Witness) following up on La Gazzetta's claim and stating that Tottenham are in the "front row" to sign Gudmundsson – who'll cost suitors just £26 million.

Interestingly, teammate Kevin Strootman has likened the player to Salah – which comes as pretty lofty praise.

“If he keeps improving, he won’t stay at Genoa for long,” Strootman told Il Secolo XIX newspaper.

“He reminds me of Salah when he was at Roma, in that every now and then he disappears. Much like Salah then, he would have four or five chances per match and only score at most one.

“They used to say that if Salah was more clinical, he would be playing for Liverpool, and that is exactly what happened. All joking aside, Gudmundsson is a devastating player and also an exemplary professional.”

Man Utd were bled dry by “unreliable” dud who earned more than Garnacho

Manchester United have been underwhelming for the majority of this campaign, as evidenced by their sixth-place position in the Premier League.

However, it won’t just be the performances on the field that will have concerned new owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, with the way the club has functioned behind the scenes serving as a huge problem.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, new owner of Manchester United at a Premier League game

From Casemiro earning £350k-per-week to Anthony Martial being paid £250k-per-week, the club has struggled to keep a lid on wages.

Unfortunately, this has been the case for years, with one player, in particular, rinsing the club of millions. while even earning more than Alejandro Garnacho currently does.

Alejandro Garnacho’s 23/24 campaign

At just 19 years of age, it can very much be argued that Garnacho has been Man United’s best player this season, showing bravery and courage to drag the team to victories.

The Argentine has been influential on both flanks, with his well-rounded ability allowing him to play on the right, despite preferring to be a left-winger.

This tactical tweak by Ten Hag seems to have worked brilliantly, as the number 17 has scored four goals and provided two assists in 13 games in his new role.

Alongside his talent, Garnacho’s continuous reliability and availability are remarkable, having not missed a game through injury all season.

Despite this, the United academy graduate is currently earning £50k-per-week or £2.6m per season, which is far less than one individual who struggled to impact the side on a frequent basis.

ByTom Lever Mar 15, 2024 What Phil Jones cost Man United over his career

In 2011, Phil Jones joined Man United from Blackburn Rovers in a deal worth £16m after meeting his release clause, signing on a five-year contract.

Jones was known as a promising talent who could thrive in multiple roles, and that was on show during his first campaign, playing 29 Premier League matches as a right-back, defensive midfielder, and centre-half.

During his early career, Sir Alex Ferguson infamously stated that the number four had the potential to become Man United’s “best ever player,” which just highlights how highly-rated Jones once was.

However, it’s fair to say that injuries completely ruined the 32-year-old’s career, with Jones missing a total of 210 games through injury since 2013, which meant that he was only able to reach 20 league appearances in one season after 2015.

Despite suffering multiple setbacks, Jones was earning £50k-per-week, according to Capology, and in 2019, he was handed a new contract until 2023 that saw his wage increase to £75k-per-week, which is clearly £25k more than Garnacho's weekly wage.

After signing that new deal, Jones only made 13 Premier League appearances due to injury, in what was an extremely frustrating and difficult spell for the former England international.

Throughout his United career, Jones was unfortunately rather “unreliable,” as per football creator Liam Canning, but what’s frustrating is that Canning also mentioned that Jones was often “excellent” when available.

Nevertheless, over his 12-year stay at the club, which ended last summer upon the expiry of that contract, Jones most definitely rinsed the Red Devils due to his lack of minutes, costing the club a huge £48.5m when his original fee and wages are combined.

Messi is nursing ankle damage, with a protective boot being donned at present, and no timescale has been put on his recovery. He has been ruled out of the MLS All-Star Game and is expected to miss Inter Miami’s defence of their Leagues Cup crown.

The lack of transparency regarding his fitness has, however, led ex-United States international Herculez Gomez to tell : “It is complete horsecrap that they won’t give you an outline on what’s exactly going on and how long it will be. Other teams have to give you that. Inter Miami staying tight-lipped and not saying anything, that to me is embarrassing for MLS. We’ve always heard things and seen things from MLS from the beginning, the LA Galaxy got away with these things, LAFC got away with those things, Toronto here, Seattle there, but when it comes to Inter Miami, you’ve not only proven to get away with it, you look the other away, you publicly look the other way.”

Marizanne Kapp four-for sets up series win for South Africa

Lizelle Lee, Sune Luus and Mignon du Preez combine to chase down the small target easily

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Jan-2020Marizanne Kapp’s four-for first restricted New Zealand women to a below-par total of 115, and then Lizelle Lee, Sune Luus and Mignon du Preez combined to chase down the target within 24 overs in the second ODI as South Africa sealed the three-match series in Auckland.Opting to bat first, New Zealand were jolted by fast bowler Kapp’s early strikes, as they lost their openers inside the first five overs for just 12 runs. Suzie Bates, at No. 3, fought with a 60-ball 38 to lead a recovery but received little or no support from the other end as the New Zealand procession continued.Sophie Devine and Katie Perkins fell short of their creases, departing for 9 and 0 respectively, following which a brief 47-run resistance between Bates and Katey Martin followed. After the partnership was broken by Dane van Niekerk, Ayabonga Khaka hurt the hosts further with a double-strike in the 24th over to remove Bates and Amelia Kerr. Kapp returned to dismiss Leigh Kasperek and Jess Kerr to finish with four wickets and leave New Zealand at 108 for 9. The last-wicket pair could add only seven more runs to the total as Masabata Klaas had Hayley Jensen caught behind. In reply, Devine dismissed opener Laura Wolvaardt for a duck but Lee continued her fine form with a 43-ball 38, with Luus at the other end, as South Africa cruised towards the target. Du Preez joined Luus after Lee’s dismissal as the pair put up an unbroken 60-run stand and secured an easy win for the visitors.

PIF can repeat Isak masterclass in Newcastle swoop for £26m star

Newcastle United are currently enduring a horrific spell of injuries, with numerous crucial first-team members spending extended periods on the sidelines.

Players such as Nick Pope and Joelinton have missed large spells of the current campaign with different problems, with the Magpies' Premier League standing taking a huge hit as a result.

Eddie Howe's side have dropped from a Champions League spot, down to eighth, with the club currently 15 points off the Premier League's top four and potentially having to settle for a place in the Conference League next season.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

Centre-back Sven Botman is the latest long-term absentee within the Newcastle squad, with the Dutchman spending up to nine months out of the first-team after undergoing surgery to repair his ACL.

The club now look light in defensive areas and are believed to be targeting one player to help solve their current injury issues.

Newcastle's search for a centre-back

According to Ruben Uria via Objectivo Atlético, the Magpies are interested in signing Real Sociedad centre-back Robin Le Normand, with the 27-year-old subject to major interest.

The French-born defender, who plays for the Spanish national side, has also been linked with a move to Atlético Madrid and Italian side Napoli, with Le Normand a man in demand ahead of the summer.

The three clubs have all submitted offers for the Sociedad man, with Napoli offering the highest amount with £23m with £4.2m in bonuses and add-ons.

Newcastle's bid for the Spaniard is worth almost £26m – £21.4m with a further £4.2m – but it is said that the defender is keen on a move to Atlético over the Magpies and the Serie A outfit.

Despite his desire to stay in Spain, Howe's side should be looking to convince Le Normand to join the club, with his stats this campaign very impressive, to say the least.

Robin Le Normand's stats in 2023/24

Le Normand has been consistently at the heart of Sociedad's defence during the 2023/24 La Liga campaign, with the 27-year-old featuring 23 times for the club, scoring on two occasions.

Although Botman's going to have to spend a lengthy period away from first-team action, he would be the long-term partner for Le Normand over the likes of Fabian Schar.

Real Sociedad defenderRobin Le Normand.

When comparing the Spaniard to 32-year-old Schar, he comes out on top, proving that he would be an astute addition for Howe's side.

Defensively, the pair are very similar, with Sociedad's centre-back marginally coming out on top with his tally of 1.2 tackles per 90 just piping the Swiss' tally of 1.1.

However, Le Normand is far superior to Schar in terms of aerials won per game, with the Sociedad averaging 4.2 compared to the Magpies' defender who can only manage 1.9.

It's not just out of possession where the "aggressive" Spaniard – as dubbed by former manager Manolo Marquez – beats the 32-year-old, but also in possession with the in-demand talent averaging 6% more passes completed than Schar.

It wouldn't be the first time the Magpies have signed a player from the Basque, with PIF purchasing Alexander Isak on a club-record deal in 2022, the Swede going on to have a successful time at St James' Park, scoring 29 times in his 59 appearances for the club.

The one-time Borussia Dortmund man – who is now being touted for a £100m move away from St James' – has particularly sparkled this season with 19 goals in all competitions to date, proving just what a coup it was to bring him to the Premier League from La Liga.

That transfer blinder could then soon be replicated this summer, with Le Normand seemingly set to be a brilliant addition to Howe's back four and potentially the ideal long-term partner for Botman upon his return from injury at the end of 2024.

Premier League champions charged in 2023Case could be completed by end of the yearSpeculation raging regarding possible sanctionsWHAT HAPPENED?

The reigning Premier League champions have known since February 2023 that supposed financial mismanagement, dating back to 2009, was going to fall under the microscope at some stage. A protracted saga could finally be brought to a close before the end of the calendar year.

There has been plenty of speculation regarding potential punishments for City, as Everton and Nottingham Forest have already been stung with points deductions after breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). City maintain their innocence in a long-running Financial Fair Play episode.

WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

Supporters have been reacting to the news that City are set to face their date with destiny, with many expecting the issue to be brushed under the carpet. @DBW77 has said: “We all know how this ends. Slap on the wrist via an 'unprecedented fine' which will be chicken feed for them. In some ways for City it'd be better to be found guilty and get a massive sanction. Otherwise there will always be a cloud over them.” @Ma6eS_9 added: “Plenty of time for them to take the judge on a nice holidays.” @GeorgeGolazo went on to say: “They're obviously not going to relegate them as the leagues below have started and because the FA are all about money they won't leave the league to be 19 teams. The most they will do is a points deduction but I have zero faith in the FA to act as they should.” @DGFTBL claims that “Everton would have been deducted another 30 odd points by the time these lot get a not guilty verdict.”
