CA deny Lynn NoC over injury concerns

His troublesome right shoulder forces decision; CA want him ready for the domestic one-day competition in September

Melinda Farrell30-Jun-2018Concerns surrounding a shoulder injury caused Australian authorities to deny Chris Lynn a No Objection Certificate for the Global T20 tournament, currently taking place in Toronto.Organisers announced Lynn as a marquee player for Edmonton Royals in the inaugural Canadian competition, but he has been absent for the start of the tournament. ESPNcricinfo understands the decision to deny Lynn a NOC was shared by Cricket Australia, Queensland and Brisbane Heat.Lynn’s long term issues with his troublesome right shoulder flared up when he dislocated it while diving in the field during the Australia’s Tri-Series Final win over New Zealand in February. He had been playing with the issue for some months, despite its severe restrictions on his ability to throw and field.

As a result of the injury, the Australian batsman was ruled out of the Pakistan Super League, where he was signed by Lahore Qalandars, but he was sufficiently recovered to play 16 games in six weeks for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.At the conclusion of the IPL, scans showed Lynn’s shoulder had recovered to the point it was deemed stable and sound and required no surgery. Lynn was, however left out of Australia’s ODI and T20 teams that were whitewashed on the recent tour of England.ESPNcricinfo understands that management decided he needed further rehabilitation in order to recover full range and strength in his shoulder. It is understood there is still a strong chance Lynn will be deemed fit to play for Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League, but CA’s main priority is to have him ready to compete in Australia’s domestic one-day competition, the JLT Cup, in September.A fully-fit Lynn, able to move and dive freely in the field in addition to his powerful batting, would be a major asset for Australia leading into next year’s World Cup.Lynn’s importance to Australia’s ODI side has been heightened after Steven Smith and David Warner were banned for their involvement in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. Both players were granted NOCs to compete in the GT20 competition.Far from the only late withdrawal from the tournament, Lynn was replaced by Andre Fletcher in the Edmonton Royals squad. The three Pakistan players called into the squad for the T20I tri-series have been replaced by Anton Devcich at Toronto Nationals, Umar Akmal at Edmonton Royals and Dwayne Smith at Montreal Tigers.Separately, Rumman Raees was replaced by Mohammad Sami in the Nationals squad while South African Christiaan Jonker was replaced by Farhaan Behardien for Montreal Tigers. The three Sri Lankans in the Montreal Tigers squad have been replaced by Moises Henriques, Peter Siddle and Kevon Cooper.

Sheffield Wednesday: Chansiri in talks with new coach

Sheffield Wednesday's search for a new manager following the dismissal of Xisco Munoz is still ongoing, with several names linked with the position. The Owls are understandably taking time to consider their options, perhaps well aware of the need to get their next appointment right, given that they sit bottom of the Championship on just three points.

If they get things wrong once again, then those at Hillsborough will likely remain on course for a return to League One, just one season after they earned promotion at Wembley. Hoping to avoid taking two steps back after such impressive progress last season, Sheffield Wednesday and owner Dejphon Chansiri have reportedly opened talks with one of two lead candidates for the job.

Latest Sheffield Wednesday manager news

So far, we've seen a range of names mentioned in the running for the Sheffield Wednesday job, with Neil Warnock, Steve Evans, Nathan Jones, Steve Evans, Oscar Garcia, and Sabri Lamouchi all linked with the job at Hillsborough. Chansiri is yet to make an official appointment, however, leaving the race well and truly open for anyone to win.

With that said, Joe Crann of The Star has provided a Sheffield Wednesday manager update, reporting that the Owls have opened talks with former Bayern Munich and Germany coach Danny Rohl, who is one of two leading candidates. Rohl would certainly be an interesting option, compared to the more experienced names mentioned for the role, that's for sure, but only time will tell whether he lands the job or if Chansiri looks elsewhere once more.

Crann stated that the former Bayern coach came close to taking up the role last summer when he was still the assistant manager of Germany, before Munoz took the job. Clearly on Sheffield Wednesday's radar for a while, Rohl could now finally get his chance.

Who is Danny Rohl?

If Rohl was to take up the role at Sheffield Wednesday, it would be his first managerial role, having been an assistant all throughout his career. That said, he has been at some impressive clubs. He has been the assistant manager at Southampton, under Ralph Hasenhuttl, and at Bayern Munich, Germany, and RB Leipzig, learning from the likes of Hansi Flick and Niko Kovak. So, despite his inexperience in the main job, it is clear that, from a tactical standpoint, Rohl would arrive with some modern ideas.

Whoever comes in next must get the Owls firing once more. So far this season, they have scored just five goals in the Championship, failing to win a single game, and sitting seven points adrift of safety just 10 games into the campaign. If it is to be Rohl's first-ever managerial role, then he has picked a hefty task.

From Sheffield Wednesday's point of view, it could easily be viewed as a risky move to appoint Rohl when in such a dangerous position. They may go onto regret not going for other, more experienced candidates, if they name the former Bayern Munich assistant in the coming days, but it looks like one to watch.

PSV chasing Dest permanent transferSet to approach with bid under release clauseHas starred on loan at Eredivisie leadersWHAT HAPPENED?

According to , PSV want to keep Dest in Eindhoven past his loan this season, however, they're set to approach Barcelona with an offer of their own – instead of triggering his release clause. The Dutch giants are incredibly happy with the versatile fullback, who has excelled in all competitions, with one goal and six assists across the board.

PSV's approach would entail them making a bid for Dest under the value of his current release clause of €10m (£9m/$11m). The Catalan club could be enticed by a bid simply to get him off their books, especially considering that he is now on his second loan away from the first-team since arriving from Ajax in 2020-21.

DID YOU KNOW?

Alongside Dest, fellow U.S. internationals Malik Tillman and Ricardo Pepi craft their trade at the Dutch club, too. Tillman has six goals and seven assists across all competitions, while Pepi has taken a super substitute role for the Dutch side, with seven goals and two assists.

Leicester transfer news: Maresca’s "prolific" £80k-p/w ace wanted overseas

Leicester City could be set to lose one of their first-team stars in January, with a fresh report revealing that he is wanted by a huge club overseas.

Leicester City transfer news

Over the summer, Enzo Maresca’s side sanctioned the sales of nine players on a permanent basis, whilst a further three were sent on loan for the remainder of the season in search of more regular game time, and here is how the club’s outgoings panned out:

James Maddison (Tottenham Hotspur)

Victor Kristiansen (Bologna)

Harvey Barnes (Newcastle United)

Boubakary Soumare (Sevilla)

Timothy Castagne (Fulham)

Luke Thomas (Sheffield United)

George Hirst (Ipswich Town)

Youri Tielemans (Aston Villa)

Caglar Soyuncu (Atletico Madrid)

Daniel Amartey (Besiktas)

Ayoze Perez (Real Betis)

Jonny Evans (Manchester United)

The King Power Stadium outfit, however, might still be forced to cash in on even more next year, one in particular being Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who has reportedly previously attracted significant interest from Liverpool in the Premier League.

The Foxes have now additionally received more attention regarding a favourite in the Midlands in the form of Kelechi Iheanacho, who is facing an uncertain future with his deal being set to expire at the end of the current term in the Championship (Leicester contracts).

The Nigerian striker was linked with a move to Crystal Palace, Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Everton before the deadline in September, and whilst a switch failed to come to fruition at the time, the 27-year-old is believed to have gained an admirer from overseas.

Kelechi Iheanacho transfer update

According to FC Inter News, sharing a transfer update on Kelechi Iheanacho, Leicester are set to face a battle to hold onto their centre-forward who is wanted by Inter Milan, but it's stated that they are yet to make a decision on whether to pursue a deal.

Among the players proposed is also Kelechi Iheanacho, a 27-year-old Leicester striker who will also expire in 2024. For the moment in Viale della Liberazione it's availability is recorded, but before arriving at a verdict it will be necessary to make several evaluations on the characteristics of the Nigerian.”

Leicester City strikerKelechi Iheanacho.

How many goals has Iheanacho scored?

Since the start of his career, Iheanacho has racked up an impressive 133 contributions, 86 goals and 47 assists, in 292 appearances, which shows how “prolific” he is in the final third, as hailed by football talent scout Jacek Kulig (Transfermarkt – Iheanacho statistics).

Sponsored by Nike, Maresca’s left-footed ace also ranks in the 99th percentile for pass completion so he has strong link-up play with his fellow teammates in and around the opposition’s penalty area (FBRef – Iheanacho statistics), and he can do more than just lead the line.

The Foxes’ £80k-per-week earner (Leicester salaries), has the versatility to operate everywhere across the frontline, including out wide on the left and right wings alongside as a second striker, so retaining his services is vital and he definitely deserves to be offered a new deal.

The Red Dragons surged back into the EFL ranks in record-breaking style last season, as they claimed the National League title. A bid for the fourth-tier crown in English football has been pieced together in 2023-24, although an untimely wobble of late has narrowed focus at SToK Racecourse on a top-three finish.

AdvertisementWHAT PARKINSON HAS SAID

Wrexham have eight games left to take in this season, starting with a trip to Grimsby on Saturday, and Phil Parkinson has said of a thrilling climax to the campaign: "It is still all to play for. It is a very tight division and very competition, and we are in the mix where we want to be. We could be a in a lot stronger position, but we are not. But we look at the league table and say 'it is just an eight-game season, that's what it is all about now', and we have got to be ready for that."

Data analysts have used a SuperComputer – which takes into account betting partners, sentimental analysis and historic form – to draw up a final League Two table using code that is “written and simulated 1,000 times to rule out anomalous results”. Netherlands' batting cuts loose but rain has the final say

After a month-long heat wave across the UK, the weather gods decided to play a prank on a pair of Associate nation guests making their long-awaited return to Lord’s

Peter Della Penna at Lord's29-Jul-2018
ScorecardAfter a month-long heat wave across the UK, the weather gods decided to play a prank on a pair of Associate nation guests making their long-awaited return to Lord’s. In the T20 tri-series played by hosts MCC, Nepal and Netherlands, rain was the ultimate winner as a pair of scheduled 20-over matches between the MCC and each Associate were reduced to six-over affairs before the finale between Nepal and Netherlands ended with a no result after 16.4 overs. For Netherlands, this was their first T20I at Lord’s since the 2009 World T20, where they pulled off one of their greatest triumphs against England. Two years ago, Nepal had made their 50-over Lord’s debut against the MCC in front of more than 5000 fans. Despite it being on a weekend, just over 2000 fans turned up to Lord’s on this day as the majority of fans around the UK were scared off by damp weather, a scarce occurrence all July.Fans who did show up were treated to an impressive Dutch batting display through much of the afternoon. Making use of the short east side boundary on offer thanks to a pitch chosen near the end of the Lord’s square, Wesley Barresi powered the Netherlands with an impressive 44 off 24 balls after entering at No. 3. His innings included six fours as well as an exquisitely timed six driven over cover off medium pacer Sompal Kami.Barresi added 54 for the third wicket with Ryan ten Doeschate and when Barresi departed near the end of the ninth over, it was ten Doeschate who dazzled with a series of elegant flicks over mid on. Playing his first T20I in more than eight years, the ageless wonder spent his day off from Essex captaincy showing he hasn’t lost his touch at international level one bit as he cruised to 38 off 27 balls.A rain break after 12 overs broke Netherlands’ momentum. They resumed at 112 for 3 with two overs shaved off the match and two balls later ten Doeschate was run out thanks to a brilliant charge, scoop and fire by Dipendra Singh Airee from backward point.Michael Rippon showed how much he was missed at the World Cup Qualifier by dismantling Nepal’s spinners on his way to 38 not out off 22 balls. Shane Edwards was just as relentless, swatting an unbeaten 34 off 14 that included three fours and back-to-back sixes off star legspinner Sandeep Lamichhane in the 16th. He was the most expensive bowler on the day, finishing with 0 for 43 in three overs.Captain Paras Khadka vigorously dried the ball with a towel after nearly every delivery in a vain attempt to make it easier for Lamichhane and the other spinners to grip in the midst of a steady drizzle. A short time later, the drizzle turned into a thick shower and it became clear that play would be difficult to continue. When Rippon backed out of a delivery with the wind and rain blowing in his face midway through the 17th over, that became the final signal and the umpires took everyone off one ball later with Netherlands’ innings declared finished at 174 for 4.Despite hopes of a restart, officials called off play more than an hour before the official cutoff time as the forecast for the rest of the evening remained bleak. Nepal’s players shook hands with the Dutch, then continued on to the edge of the stands to show thanks to their supporters. With many having traveled from as far as the USA and even Nepal to take in the occasion, a selfie with Khadka, Lamichhane and the rest was just as good as a six.

Rangers make first move over off-field Ibrox appointment

It's a time of change at Rangers following the dismissal of Michael Beale, and the subsequent arrival of Philippe Clement to guide the Gers back into Scottish Premiership title contention. The former AS Monaco manager has a difficult task on his hands, but will be keen to make his mark in Scotland, and achieve what Beale, ultimately, failed to at Ibrox.

The Belgian will likely have an eye on the January transfer window right away, with reinforcements necessary if he is to mould the current Rangers side into his own. Clement could yet be helped by one particular off-field addition, too, with reports suggesting that Rangers have made their first move.

What's the latest Rangers news?

On the pitch, Rangers will be hoping to get off to the perfect start under their new manager, with their first game after the international break coming against Hibernian. As things stand, the Gers are seven points adrift of table-toppers Celtic, having already suffered three defeats in the Scottish Premiership this season.

It has become apparent that the business completed in the summer hasn't worked out as well as it could have done, resulting in questions over recruitment. The latest Rangers news suggests that those at Ibrox are attempting to solve their off-pitch issues, however, with an approach made for Brighton & Hove Albion head of recruitment Sam Jewell to become their new technical director.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Jewell is considering the proposal, but is not convinced about leaving Brighton at the highest point in their history. The Seagulls, of course, are flying in the Premier League, and earned a place in the Europa League for the first time in their history after an excellent campaign last time out. Welcoming Jewell would certainly help solve some of Rangers' problems, though it remains to be seen whether the Brighton man will accept the role.

Who is Sam Jewell?

Making the move to Brighton in 2018 after initially working as an opposition scout for Newport County and a chief scout for Swindon Town, Jewell's rise has been almost as impressive as the Seagulls'. He has played an important role in the work done off the pitch to make Brighton into the recruitment machine that they have become, which has seen players like Moises Caicedo thrive before leaving for large fees.

Jewell is the exact type of person that Rangers could do with when it comes to identifying players, given their relatively small budget compared to others around Europe. The Brighton man could unlock similar gems to those he has helped bring to his current club, before helping them to ensure an incredible profit.

It would represent a major coup if Rangers were to land the 34-year-old, who has helped to transform Brighton in the Premier League by identifying talent from the likes of South America. As things stand, however, with the Seagulls at their highest point in history, and Rangers contrastingly struggling, it remains to be seen whether Jewell will make the move to the Scottish Premiership. It would certainly be an impressive move from the Gers, that's for sure.

The 29-year-old Portugal international sees his contract in Manchester expire in 2026, but that hasn't stopped rumours about a return to his boyhood club continuing to circulate – particularly in his home country. Asked by Portuguese outlet (via ) if a Benfica homecoming was on the cards, Silva refused to rule it out and even joked it may happen sooner than we think.

The City midfielder said in reply to a question posed by pundit – and renowned Benfica fan – Ricardo Araujo Pereira: "How far am I from returning? I think people are a bit tired of that question. It's been a long time. I'm sure I'll be back, I don't know when, it's hard to time it and say if it's in two years' time, in three years' time, if it's next year with [current Benfica boss] Roger Schmidt [laughs]. But I've said it several times and I think people get tired of hearing it: without a doubt it's a career and life goal to return to Benfica."

Silva's comments reflect his love for Benfica, a club for whom he only made three senior appearances but where he started as a 12-year-old before working his way up the U15, U17 and U19 sides. Silva moved to Monaco in 2014 before being snapped up by City three years later, where he has since staked his claim as being one of the world's best in his position. The Portuguese has had a huge hand in landing them countless trophies during the Pep Guardiola era, including the historic treble win last term.
