3 Tips to Start Winning More Football Bets

Have you recently gotten into betting on football, but have still yet to see any substantial winnings? Then you may just be going about it the wrong way. Placing the right bets and making a solid profit from them is by no means easy, and getting to know all the pitfalls of sports betting will take you years of failing if you try to do it on your own. Instead, read on as we go through three valuable tips for making better bets. You’ll be surprised how quickly your bets will start paying off with just a few simple adjustments.

Compare Odds to Maximise Your Wins

Before you start placing your bets, it’s important to make sure that you’re choosing the best place to do so. Many beginners tend to focus on picking the right outcome to bet on and then just choose whichever site they come across first to place it on – when in actuality, they should be giving equal amounts of attention to both choices.

The first bookmaker you find is not necessarily the one with the best odds. Sure, the usual suspects at the top of your Google search look safe. But there are many other, albeit lesser known sites out there. For instance, NetBet offers betting and casino games and are just as trustworthy – and who knows? They may very well offer the best odds out there for your next bet.

Keep Up With Team and Player News

Next, if you want to consistently take home big wins from your bets, you need to stay updated. Because if your info isn’t correct, detailed and fresh, how will you ever accurately guess the outcome of a game – other than by pure coincidence, which is impossible to replicate for your next bet?

Instead, make sure to follow and regularly check all relevant channels of information on your favourite team and their players. For instance, if you’re betting on one or two star players to save your team next season, knowing if they’re in transfer negotiations is of utmost importance. Or, even worse, if a key player gets injured before a big match, it can greatly affect the outcome – and either make you a lot of money or leave you broke.

Research and Listen to the Experts

Last, but not least, don’t solely rely on your own analyses and the opinions of friends, family and other football fans. While you may often be right, there’s no getting around that, as enthusiastic fans, you’re bound to be biased. Focusing on the performance of your favourite team is completely natural, but it may blind you from their faults and distract you from seeing potential in other teams.

To get the full picture, we recommend that you find a few trustworthy expert sources to go to for second opinions. Many newspapers – like, for instance, The Telegraph – have pages dedicated to betting tips and analyses, and during pre-game coverage, networks will usually do live interviews with experienced experts as well.

Besides this, there are countless blogs, YouTube channels and many other types of communities out there for you to sift through for betting research. All in all, there’s really no excuse for placing an uninformed bet. So get to work!

Tottenham: Big Memphis Depay transfer news

Tottenham ‘have asked’ Barcelona about the possibility of signing Memphis Depay, according to Spanish publication Sport (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

The two clubs have recently been negotiating over a season-long loan deal for centre-back Clement Lenglet.

It was only last summer that the Catalan giants signed Depay on a free transfer after he reached the end of his Lyon contract, but it’s worth noting that they are in dire straits financially, operating under €1.3bn (£1.12bn) of debt.

Depay has previously had a stint in English football, of course, making a £25m move to Manchester United back in 2015.

However, it didn’t go to plan for the forward at Old Trafford, who left to join Lyon for an initial £16m two years later after scoring just seven goals in 53 appearances.

The latest

The report from Sport (via Sport Witness) states that the possibility of a move for Depay has arisen in the course of the talks over Lenglet.

Tottenham’s enquiry was met with a valuation of €20m (£17.1m) from Barcelona, where the 28-year-old would ideally like to stay, but his representatives have been told that they can find him a new club.

If the Dutchman were to leave Camp Nou, he’d want a move a Champions League outfit such as Spurs.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The verdict

It seems that Barcelona may be selling Depay out of necessity, rather than dissatisfaction with his performances. Indeed, he bagged 12 La Liga goals last season, having only started 20 games – on average, he was netting one every 152 minutes.

No Barcelona player scored more goals in 2021/22, with Depay and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finishing level at the top of the club’s standings.

Depay offers Conte versatility, able to operate as both a centre-forward and a winger. As a number nine, he is stylistically similar to Karim Benzema and Alexander Isak; while out wide, he’s closely matched in style with Mohamed Salah, Raheem Sterling, Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz.

Compatriot and former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has previously raved about the ‘conviction’ and ‘desire’ which make Depay ‘beautiful to watch’.

The 28-year-old could be a shrewd pick-up by Spurs for what looks like a reasonable price.

West Brom must finally axe Callum Robinson

West Bromwich Albion have seen three big names leave the Championship club in recent weeks during the current transfer window.

Sam Johnstone joined Crystal Palace in the Premier League, while Romaine Sawyers moved to Cardiff City, both on free transfers. Andy Carroll also waved goodbye to The Hawthorns after his recent loan spell with the Baggies, but he is yet to find a new club.

Before the transfer window ends, West Brom could have the chance to not only get another player out the door, but actually raise some funds from his sale at the same time.

After being recently linked with a move to Preston North End, Baggies attacker Callum Robinson could give his current club the chance to pick up a suitable cash injection should they be able to sell him this summer. In fact, Preston manager Ryan Lowe recently confirmed the Lilywhites’ interest in signing the Irishman, who has called Deepdale his home in the past.

He said: “I’m not interested in Callum Robinson because of what he’s done for the football club, I’m interested in Callum Robinson because he’s a good footballer, ultimately. What he has done for the football club previously will obviously extend that for them.

“Callum Robinson, if he becomes available, who wouldn’t look at Callum Robinson? He is a fantastic player and PNE fans love him, so why wouldn’t anyone be interested in him? If he became available, of course we’d be interested in him, like everyone else would be.”

Despite scoring seven goals and providing nine assists in 43 league appearances last season, the forward went through periods where he didn’t deliver any goal contributions for Albion.

The longest period started (rather ironically) at West Brom’s 2-0 defeat to Preston in January and ended when he scored the winning goal against Fulham in the Baggies’ 1-0 victory over the Cottagers in March, a run of nine matches without a goal or assist.

This highlights his inconsistency when it comes to being a goal threat for his team and explains why it may be beneficial for the Midlands club to get rid of him. Even his performances for his country have been described as “head-scratching” by Irish football pundit Eamon Dunphy.

With Steve Bruce aiming to get West Brom back in the Premier League, having a fairly unreliable attacker like Robinson in the team could well hinder the club’s chances of securing promotion.

Therefore, if the club can sell the £18k-per-week Irishman and get a decent transfer fee for him which could be used to bring in a suitable replacement, this could be a great next step for all parties.

Ornstein drops update on Everton target

Everton have been heavily linked with a move for Armando Broja this summer, and now a new update has emerged on the player’s current situation from a reliable source.

What’s the latest?

According to football correspondent for The Athletic David Ornstein, Everton transfer target Broja will join Chelsea in their preseason tour of the USA this week, despite the Toffees continuing to pursue the youngster.

Ornstein tweeted:

“Armando Broja will fly to USA this week & join Chelsea on USA tour. 20yo striker didn’t travel with group on Sat amid uncertainty over future. But despite likes of West Ham + Everton pursuing, no major developments so far.”

Dream DCL heir

Frank Lampard is in desperate need of reinforcements in the team following a difficult campaign in the Premier last season, and with Richarlison already leaving the Merseyside club this summer and Dominic Calvert-Lewin linked with a move to Newcastle, Broja is exactly what the Toffees boss needs.

Although Broja will be joining his teammates on tour this summer, it shouldn’t deter Everton in their pursuit to sign the player as he could be an incredible influence in the forward line, something he proved whilst on a season-long loan at Southampton last season.

The 20-year-old striker was the second highest scoring player for the Saints last season scoring nine goals and delivering one assist in all competitions, but it’s not just his goal contributions that make him a formidable force in the forward line.

In 32 Premier League appearances, Broja created two big chances, taking 1.4 shots and winning five duels on average per game, in fact, the youngster ranked third last season in the entire top five leagues across Europe for the most aerial duels committed in his own half.

Lampard is no stranger to the £58m Albanian gem, as he gave the young talent his debut at Chelsea when he was managing the team in 2020 and lavished praise on Broja last season claiming he has an “eye for goal” in a press conference:

“He’s a very nice, very good lad and a very talented young boy.

“He’s fast, strong, has an eye for a goal. A very good player.”

With that being, Lampard can use his relationship with Broja to convince the player to make the move to Merseyside this summer and with the right development could even become Calvert-Lewin’s heir at Goodison Park.

Leon King can be Rangers’ next Goldson

Despite heavy links with some Premier League clubs, Rangers were able to keep hold of talismanic centre-back Connor Goldson this summer, as he committed to a new four-year deal at Ibrox.

However, had the 29-year-old decided to leave Glasgow, Giovanni van Bronckhorst may well have had a natural heir to the English defender in Leon King.

The 18-year-old is highly regarded at Rangers and looks set for a bright future at Ibrox, having already made eight appearances for the first team.

Before his departure for Aston Villa last November, former Gers boss Steven Gerrard was full of praise for the youngster, saying: “We want to be able to give these opportunities out to the kids, but the kids have got to come with us and they have got to be good enough and Leon has been superb in training.

“The biggest compliment I can pay him for his age and where he is at is he hasn’t looked out of place in training, so that wasn’t a sentimental substitution tonight – he has earned it by training really well among his peers at first-team level.”

Villa were linked with signing the teenager last season before he committed to a new deal which should keep him at Ibrox until 2024.

When the defender signed his first professional deal with Rangers, rejecting interest from Manchester City, Manchester United, Spurs and Arsenal to do so, he reportedly became one of the highest-paid youngsters in the club’s history, so he is clearly regarded quite highly at Ibrox.

Van Bronckhorst may have added John Souttar to his squad this summer, but King will still be hoping to receive some more first-team opportunities next season.

[freshpress-quiz id=“712674″]

Football Scotland have suggested that the 18-year-old returned to pre-season early to try and impress the Rangers staff, which suggests that he has exactly the sort of attitude that’s needed to succeed in high-level football.

As a homegrown talent, he could be the ideal candidate to step up as Goldson’s long-term heir at Ibrox, as he would likely replicate the centre-back’s passion and work rate in a Light Blues shirt.

Rangers fans will surely be hoping to see a lot more from King in the future, as he appears to be a hugely exciting talent.

Newcastle: Ivan Toney priced at £40m+

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their chances of signing Ivan Toney in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to iNews, Brentford will not consider any bids lower than £40m for the English centre-forward ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

The report claims that a number of teams, including the Magpies, have been linked with him but no official offers have been made as of yet.

It remains to be seen whether or not Dan Ashworth is willing to spend in excess of £40m to land the attacker in the coming weeks.

Eddie Howe’s own Louis Saha

If the ex-Brighton chief does bring Toney to St. James’ Park this summer then he could be signing Eddie Howe his own version of former Toon man Louis Saha.

Journalist Rob Blanchette, in discussing a potential Manchester United move for the striker, compared him to the retired Frenchman. He Tweeted: “Louis Saha is a great comparison to Ivan Toney: blooded in the Championship, bought by Sir Alex to provide a different type of MUFC No. 9 skill set, both players underrated with their feet & intelligence. Unfashionable targets but can do a great job.”

The 42-year-old played 12 games on loan at Newcastle early on in his career before eventually making his mark in England with Fulham – scoring 27 goals in one First Division (Championship) season and 26 Premier League goals in two-and-a-half campaigns for the Cottagers.

He then spent time at Manchester United and Everton in the top flight before the end of his career and Newcastle can now find a similar player in Toney.

The Brentford man, like Saha, made his mark in the Championship with 31 goals in 45 matches. He then made the step up to the Premier League with an impressive 12 goals and five assists in 33 outings for the newly-promoted side.

Toney has proven that he has the quality to make a big impact at the top end of the pitch as a traditional number nine, like Saha did throughout his career in England. They are both strikers who demolished the second tier and have been able to score goals consistently in the top flight.

The Frenchman only scored twice during his loan spell at St. James’ Park but the Brentford predator’s statistics suggest that he would notch far more than that if he is made the main man up top for Howe next season.

Leeds on verge of Joe Gelhardt extension

Leeds United are closing in on another deal this summer transfer window…

What’s the word?

According to TEAMtalk editor James Marshment, the Whites are on the verge of tying young striker Joe Gelhardt down to a new contract. He tweeted:

“As per @TEAMtalk sources, Leeds United are on verge of announcing new five-year deal for Joe Gelhardt, earning 20-year-old [a] 55% payrise. Talks also progressing at tying down Crysencio Summerville to a new deal.”

The Liverpool-born forward originally joined Leeds from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2020 and has quickly found himself as part of the senior setup at Thorp Arch.

Gelhardt made his Premier League debut back in October and scored his first goal in the English top-flight against Chelsea, just two months later.

Dream deal

This is something of a dream deal for everyone concerned – supporters, manager Jesse Marsch, the striker himself.

The 20-year-old is arguably a real star of the future, given that he has already made an impact in the first team in west Yorkshire. He has also been capped at international level, most recently earning a call-up to the England U21 squad.

It was Gelhardt who handed Marsch his first win of his Leeds reign, bagging a last-ditch goal against relegation rivals Norwich City.

He then provided a late assist to clinch a point against Brighton and Hove Albion on the penultimate game of the 2021/22 campaign. In the end, he made ten appearances under the American, showing that he could play a big part in the future.

Known for his dribbling and power, Gelhardt has earned early career comparisons to that of Wayne Rooney, whilst Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp dubbed him a “human wrecking ball.”

On that evidence alone, it’s easy to see why the Yorkshire giants are keen on tying him down for the next five years but there’s another factor, his value has skyrocketed.

Aged just 17, Gelhardt’s value was worth just £675k, according to Transfermarkt, but that figure has multiplied by 789%, with CIES Football Observatory estimating his value to be around £6m.

“I’m sure we’ll find out in the years ahead, but Gelhardt may well be the best bit of business the club has done in the last 20 years, if not ever because he just looks absolutely outrageous – very, very good player,” claimed LeedsLive reporter Beren Cross.

Indeed, a fresh extension is a big step towards this claim coming to fruition, so director of football Victor Orta tying the forward down for the long-term future is certainly something of a dream move for Leeds right now.

Pundit slams Harry Kane transfer claim

Former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has lamented the untimely speculation surrounding the future of Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

The lowdown: Conte annoyed

Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann recently opened the door to a possible swoop for the Lilywhites’ talisman when suggesting that the lethal England captain would ‘score a lot’ in the Bundesliga.

The comments riled Spurs boss Antonio Conte, who responded by branding the German coach ‘disrespectful’ for talking about other club’s players in the wake of a 2-1 pre-season win at Rangers last week.

Upon hearing both sides of the back-and-forth, one pundit has had his say on the situation ahead of the Premier League starting next weekend…

The latest: ‘Last thing Tottenham need’

Speaking to Football Insider, former Leeds United shot-stopper Kenny has claimed that the unsettling background comments aren’t helpful to Conte’s plans at Tottenham.

The 44-year-old said: “It’s disappointing from Bayern Munich. This is the last thing Tottenham need with Kane trying to push through a move to Man City last summer.

“Everything has been quiet this year and everything is going in the right direction then someone throws a spanner in the works. Bayern are interested all of a sudden. I think Kane will stay, Tottenham are on the up, for me. They have an amazing new stadium, they love the manager and they have made some really good signings.

“They are going to be up there pushing the top three this season. I would be disappointed with Bayern if I was Tottenham.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The verdict: Spot on

It could yet happen that no move may come to fruition, but with a gaping hole left behind in Munich by the exit of prolific marksman Robert Lewandowski, few elite strikers in the world remain to potentially fill such a void, and Kane is among them.

After coming through months of prolonged speculation regarding a move to Premier League rivals Manchester City, the 29-year-old England captain – who was lauded as ‘frightening’ by Arsenal legend Ian Wright recently – struggled to find his peak form at the start of the 2021/22 campaign, a problem that Tottenham will hope won’t reoccur this term.

Kane eventually netted 27 times and provided 10 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring 17 times in the league to take him to 183 goals in the English top flight, 77 behind all-time record holder Alan Shearer.

Whilst there have been no reports of imminent incoming bids from Germany or beyond, Tottenham and Conte know all too well of the need to keep their £81m-valued prized asset on form and content, a task which would be made more straightforward by making a positive start to the 2022/23 campaign.

Liverpool table an offer for Yeremy Pino

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Yeremy Pino this summer, and now a new update has emerged on the club’s pursuit of the player.

What’s the latest?

According to Spanish journalist Xavi Jorquera Márquez, Liverpool have put a €40m (£33.8m) bid “on the table” for Villarreal wonderkid Pino.

Márquez tweeted: “Villarreal have received two offers from two Premier League teams for Yeremy Pino.

“Those clubs are Arsenal and Liverpool.”

“Both have put €40m (£33.8m) on the table. Villarreal asks €60m (£50.7m).”

He could be Salah’s heir

Despite signing a contract extension this summer that will secure his future until 2025, Mohamed Salah is not a player that Liverpool will easily replace in just three years time, and preparing for the future should be something FSG will need to consider with many players in the squad in the latter stages of their career.

Six of the 11 players fielded against Fulham at Craven Cottage in the disappointing 2-2 draw this weekend were over 30 years old, so it would certainly not hurt Liverpool to start thinking about the future of the team to ensure the club’s success over the last six years won’t be short-lived.

As mentioned above, the Egyptian winger will not be an easy player to replace and his perfectly mastered position in the team will take some getting used to for any new forward intending to step into Salah’s shoes, but Pino has already shown glimpses that he is a talent worth paying attention to at Villarreal.

The 19-year-old who was hailed a “special talent” by Fabrizio Romano, made 31 appearances in the wide right position in Unai Emery’s side last season, scoring six goals, delivering four assists and creating six big chances, with the manager clearly trusting in the young player by deploying him in the position consistently.

In fact, Emery has lavished praise on his rising star, hailing Pino “brave” following his performance against Espanyol last season when the youngster scored four goals in just 53 minutes to become the youngest ever player to score a first-half hat-trick in La Liga:

“Yeremy is a 19-year-old boy who has a lot of maturity for certain things. He is competitive, brave and always wants more.”

Clearly incredibly competent in front of goal, as Salah is, the pair share more than just a prolific nature. Indeed. Pino is incredibly exciting with the ball at his feet, completing 1.6 dribbles per game last term. By comparison, Liverpool’s attacking sensation managed 1.5.

With that being said, the signing of Pino would be a great piece of business for Liverpool. Not only could they secure a young player that Klopp can develop into Salah’s heir but the club could also inject some more youth into their team in order to ensure they can compete at the highest level for years to come.

Journalist drops Dieng to Celtic verdict

Reliable journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Marseille forward Bamba Dieng could be ‘a bit too expensive’ for Celtic to sign this summer.

The Lowdown: Hoops join the race

The 22-year-old first joined the Ligue 1 outfit back in 2020 on loan, but just a year after making his deal permanent he is set for an exit at the Orange Velodrome after falling out of favour under manager Igor Tudor.

The Daily Mail reports that the Scottish Premiership champions, alongside multiple Premier League clubs including Leeds United and Newcastle, are interested in a move for the striker this window, though it looks set to be a very difficult task given his valuation.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

O’Rourke, speaking to The Transfer Tavern, suggested that Dieng could cost a fee in the region of £15m, a price tag he believes would be out of reach for Celtic. He said:

“The Champions League football would give you an advantage over a lot of clubs because that’s where most top players want to play, but I just think Bamba Dieng might just be a bit too expensive for Celtic right now, you’re probably talking around £15m to sign him so I think that’s out of Celtic’s price range.”

The Verdict: Blow for Postecoglou

If the Hoops can’t afford a move for Dieng this summer, it will be a hammer blow to Ange Postecoglou, who is clearly still keen to bolster his attacking ranks.

Last season, the Senegalese sensation – who’s even been dubbed the ‘new Sadio Mane’ – made ten goal contributions in just 25 Ligue 1 outings, as per Transfermarkt, and is a versatile individual, having played in all positions across the frontline, an attribute that will have no doubt attracted the Australian.

Celtic breaking the bank for Dieng seems highly unlikely, and with the possibility that English top-flight clubs could offer more money, the boss may well have to turn his attention elsewhere as he looks to add the last few touches to his squad for the season ahead.
