Women's World Cup Team of the Group Stage: Kerr and Renard shine as Morgan misses out

As we enter the competition's knockout rounds, Goal picks out the best XI of players from the opening stage of the tournament in France

GettyGK | Vanina Correa

Amidst the ‘smaller goals’ debate and criticism of goalkeeping in women’s football, Vanina Correa has put in three outstanding performances for Argentina, saving11 of the 15 shots she’s faced.

After keeping a clean sheet against Japan, the 2011 champions and 2015 runners-up, she couldn’t keep England at bay, but certainly did her best – her save to deny Nikita Parris from the spot the pick of six stops in a 1-0 defeat.

Scotland goalkeeper Lee Alexander summed up Correa’s displays, saying: “You look at performances like [Correa’s vs England] and you can't want to drop the goal height.”

AdvertisementGettyRB | Lucy Bronze

Doubts were raised over Lucy Bronze’s defensive competency going into this tournament, since her switch to attack-minded Lyon, but the right-back has been as sturdy as ever for England in the group stages – with a 100 per cent success rate from her 10 tackles.

There were no doubts about her world-class ability going forward though, and she has shown why, linking up brilliantly with Nikita Parris down the right.

Her ability to whip in a teasing cross has been evident throughout the group games and, combined with her tireless surges forward, has helped her create six chances from defence.

GettyCB | Wendie Renard

Few players have dominated the headlines of this World Cup so far like France’s Wendie Renard.

After netting her first two goals in the competition to help France win their opening game against South Korea, she scored an own goal against Norway and then converted a penalty against Nigeria – albeit, on her second attempt, having hit the post before VAR controversially ordered a retake.

But that goal from the spot showed her great character, emphatically winning the game for France after her initial miss, and she has been solid as ever defensively, winning 100% of her tackles (two) and aerial duels (nine).

GettyCB | Dominique Bloodworth

Having had yet another solid season at Arsenal, winning the FA Women’s Super League and reaching the WSL Cup final before sealing a move to Wolfsburg, Dominique Bloodworth has carried that form into the World Cup.

A model of consistency and reliable as ever, the 24 year old showed her class as the Netherlands won all three group games – even finding the net against Cameroon.

Winning three of her five tackles and two of her three headers, she’s not been tested much defensively, but has had the answers to any questions posed in Group E.

History for Italy but Arsenal eliminate Ajax amid chaos and controversy: Women's Champions League winners and losers

The final round of qualifiers for the UEFA Women's Champions League group stage produced an insane amount of drama…

History was made this week as several sides secured their spots in the Women's Champions League group stages for the first time.

Roma's qualification means Italy will have two representatives this year, while Vllaznia became the first Albanian club to reach the last 16 of any UEFA competition since KF Tirana did so in the 1989-90 men's European Cup.

Elsewhere, Arsenal put their name in the hat for Monday's draw with a narrow win over Ajax – which came in bizarre circumstances in Amsterdam as it was discovered before kick-off that the goalposts were 10 centimetres shorter than they should've been.

Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Juventus were all also among those to overcome tricky ties in what proved a far-from-straightforward qualifying process for the big names.

As we look ahead to the UWCL group phase, here are GOAL's winners and losers from the final round of preliminary fixtures…

GettyWINNER: Paris Saint-Germain

It's not exactly been a barnstorming start to the season by Paris Saint-Germain.

They needed an 86th-minute goal to beat Hacken in the home leg of their Champions League tie last week, and a 90th-minute winner to take three points from Sunday's league meeting with Fleury.

In addition, they didn't get going until the second half of their return clash with Hacken but still ended up recording a 2-0 victory in Sweden to secure their place in the group stages.

Still, the stat that matters is that they've played five games this season – and won all five.

With a new coach in charge, several new players coming into the team, and star striker Marie-Antoinette Katoto sidelined with an ACL injury, they've had to make several adjustments after a turbulent summer, and that's been obvious in their disjointed performances.

However, the mere fact that they are still racking up wins in spite of all the upheaval is impressive, and bodes well for the coming campaign.

When PSG finally click, they should be a force to be reckoned with.

AdvertisementGettyLOSER: UEFA

There was confusion late in the Arsenal game on Wednesday night, as head coach Jonas Eidevall prepared to make a concussion substitution after Beth Mead was left worse for wear following a foul from Lisa Doorn.

However, as the groggy England star was helped off the pitch and Lina Hurtig prepared to take her place, the latter wasn't allowed on.

"What do you mean, 'no'?" Eidevall could be heard asking the officials.

UEFA did trial concussion substitutions but when that experiment ended in July 2022, it was not implemented on a permanent basis.

Why not keep the rule, given it protects players who have suffered head injuries? The decision to abandon the initiative certainly doesn't reflect well on UEFA, given what unfolded in Amsterdam.

Indeed, had Ajax scored the one goal they needed to take the tie to extra-time, it would've caused even more controversy.

But that's ultimately besides the point. The bottom line is that these measures to protect those on the pitch are hugely important and should be put back in place as soon as possible.

GettyWINNER: Sydney Lohmann

Last season was a frustrating one for Sydney Lohmann.

Injuries limited her to just eight league appearances for Bayern Munich – four of them from the bench – and it meant she went to Euro 2022, where Germany reached the final, unable to play the starring role she would have been capable of if fully fit.

However, she looks incredibly sharp at the start of this new campaign, with her performance against Real Sociedad on Thursday evening simply sublime.

Her link-up with Linda Dallmann for Bayern's opening goal was crisp, the two showing great chemistry to slice their way through the Sociedad defence.

Her second assist, though, was even better, with Lohmann turning brilliantly to break into the box before putting the ball on a plate for Lea Schuller to tap home.

If she can stay healthy this season, then Bayern's chances of success will automatically increase, such is the quality she offers this team.

GettyLOSER: Rangers

While Rangers will have left Portugal with plenty of positives, they will have also felt aggrieved as their dream of reaching the Women's Champions League group stages was ended by Benfica on Wednesday night.

The second leg was far less eventful than the Portuguese side's 3-2 win at Ibrox – at least until 16-year-old Emma Watson scored an 87th-minute goal that sent the tie into extra time.

Rangers fell behind early into that added period, but great work by Watson again appeared to have given the visitors a way back into the tie, as she was clearly brought down in the penalty area.

However, the referee waved play on and Benfica went straight down the other end and sealed victory.

While Rangers should feel hugely positive about the future after this fine run, they would be forgiven for feeling quite bitter about the way in which it came to an end.

Martial, Malacia and the Man Utd stars forcing themselves into Ten Hag's ideal line-up

The Red Devils won again on their pre-season tour – they couldn't be title challengers, could they?

Manchester United frontman Anthony Martial sent another message to Erik ten Hag on Tuesday, scoring for the third game in succession in pre-season. The France international broke the deadlock in the 3-1 win against Crystal Palace in Melbourne to continue the Red Devils' 100 per cent record this summer.

It is a perfect start for new manager Ten Hag, who will be particularly pleased about his forwards impressing at a time when uncertainty surrounds the future of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were also on the score sheet, with Joel Ward netting a consolation for Palace.

Martial has been particularly impressive on tour after being given the chance to fight for his future. And after goals against Liverpool and Melbourne Victory, he opened the scoring after 17 minutes, with a well-taken finish.

Rashford doubled United's lead three minutes after half-time and Sancho added a third just before the hour.

Ward struck in the 74th-minute and United youngster, Will Fish, was sent off late on for a professional foul on Victor Akinwale, but Ten Hag's side held out to maintain their flawless pre-season record.

GettyTen Hag's team takes shape

Ten Hag has been consistent with the majority of his starting XI so far this pre-season.

A midfield of Fred, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes has been his favoured trio, while Martial, Sancho and Rashford have started two of the three games so far.

Harry Maguire, meanwhile was again chosen on the right of the central defence, making it clear where Ten Hag plans to use him this season.

For the first time on this tour, the United manager opted against making wholesale changes at half-time, suggesting he is getting a clearer impression of his preferred team and wants to see more of it.

AdvertisementGettyAttacking options

That's now seven goals between them for Martial, Rashford and Sancho in three pre-season games and, as a trio, they have looked lethal.

It is hard to make too many judgements at this early stage but it is a front three that has the potential to cause problems for Premier League defences.

All three have speed, trickery and mobility. Crucially – in the case of Martial, in particular – they all look like they have a point to prove.

If Ten Hag can keep them fit and focused, perhaps he won't be as reliant on want-away Ronaldo as he thought.

GettyDalot gets his chance

Diogo Dalot was told at the end of last season that he was in Ten Hag's plans – and the manager has been as good as his word.

Right-back is an area United believe they can improve upon but Dalot looks like he will get the chance to stake his claim ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who could yet be sold if an acceptable offer comes in.

Dalot has started all three games on tour, with Ten Hag a fan of his attacking instincts. And he did himself no harm by setting up Martial's opener.

GettyMalacia's first start

Tyrell Malacia didn't waste his chance to make an impression, playing a key part in Martial's opening goal.

Ten Hag has described him as a modern, attacking full-back and he demonstrated that when charging towards the edge of the box and floating a pass to Dalot on the opposite side.

Dalot's cross was then finished coolly by Martial.

That is precisely the type of link-up play Ten Hag wants to see from his full-backs this season.

Former Feyenoord starlet Malacia is also willing to take corners, which could offer another dimension to United's set-pieces.

Portugal World Cup 2022 squad, predicted line-up versus Switzerland and star players

With Portugal through to the last 16 of the World Cup, who is available to Fernando Santos for the clash against Switzerland?

Portugal are making their eighth appearance at the World Cup in Qatar and coach Fernando Santos will hope that his team can live up to the expectations.

They are yet to lift the coveted prize and their best result was a third-place finish in 1966.

Could this be the time that Cristiano Ronaldo and co. finally get their hands on the trophy after securing qualification through the play-offs?

They defeated Ghana and Uruguay but lost to South Korea in the group stage, yet they still managed to qualify for the knockout stages as group winners.

Portugal's hopes may once again rest on the shoulders of Cristiano Ronaldo. The player with the most international goals in men's football will look to add to his tally in Qatar and guide his nation to the ultimate prize.

He is being ably supported by players such as Joao Felix and AC Milan's Rafael Leao, with Diogo Jota and Pedro Neto both ruled out due to injury.

Andre Silva and Goncalo Ramos made the cut, but there is no room for Goncalo Guedes, who missed out altogether.

Would Barcelona really play Lionel Messi in midfield?! Xavi's selection dilemma if Argentine icon returns to Camp Nou

The Blaugrana want to bring the PSG star back to Catalunya, but there doesn't seem to be a clear plan on where he might fit into the line up

If Lionel Messi does indeed do what a large sector of football fans want him to and returns to Barcelona this summer, the response will likely be immense. Shirts will fly off the shelves, tickets will be snapped up in seconds, and Barca will be tipped to defend the Liga title that they are about to secure.

But then, reality will hit. For all of the benefits of Messi returning, where, exactly, does he fit into this Barca side?

This is a young team that relies on its energy and defensive work rate. The Blaugrana do have attacking talent in the form of Robert Lewandowski and Ousmane Dembele, but they are on the way to a La Liga title win thanks in the most part to their rigid defending and tactical discipline.

🏆 TOP STORY: Arteta gives worrying Saliba injury update📣 HAVE YOUR SAY: Can Haaland beat Ronaldo's UCL goal record?🚨 MUST READ: The most boring UCL knockouts ever?!

Messi is the best to ever do it, but he is not a particularly good defender, and forcing him to stick to one singular position would be an immense waste of his talent.

So, Barcelona will have to do what all Messi-led sides have done, and adjust around the Argentine star. The good news is, they have tactical flexibility all over the pitch, and the odds are that the rest of Xavi's side would sacrifice personal interests without question.

But equally, Barca have something good going and a workable system that doesn't seem conducive to Messi's addition. They reportedly want Messi to play in midfield, which would mean adjusting arguably the most efficient part of Xavi's system — tinkering with their key to success.

Regardless of where he plays, there will have to be some changes, and GOAL has taken a look at where Messi might fit at Camp Nou…

Getty ImagesMidfielder in Xavi's modified 4-4-2

This would be a tricky one. Barcelona's strength this year has been in the harmony between their midfield quartet. Indeed, with Sergio Busquets and Frenkie de Jong operating in a modified double pivot, and Gavi and Pedri playing further forward, Xavi has found a way to get four major talents into his side in a practical way.

And yet Barca reportedly want Messi to play somewhere in midfield should he return to the club.

There is no guarantee that Xavi will keep the same system regardless, and he would, in fact, be misguided to do so. However, playing Messi in midfield would mean sacrificing one of the harmonious four.

Messi would likely play a similar role to that of Pedri, operating in the right half space and functioning as an attacking midfielder. But would Xavi be willing to bench the Spain superstar?

Still, if the manager is reluctant to change his system, it's where Messi would most comfortably slot in.

AdvertisementLluis Gene/AFPRight wing in a 4-3-3

Xavi has also relied on a 4-3-3 at various points in the campaign, deploying two relatively traditional wide men who create chances for Lewandowski through the middle.

It has brought mixed results so far, with Barca becoming overly reliant on right-winger Dembele — who tends to be more dependable than a rotating cast of options on the left.

Indeed, the predictability of the formation was part of the reason the manager opted to switch his system to a 4-4-2. However, it might be the most obvious plug-and-play fit for the Argentine.

Messi, although he has gone through many different tactical switches throughout his career, is still at his best when receiving the ball in the right half-space and cutting inside onto his left.

So, asking him so start on the right of a 4-3-3 does indeed make sense. It would require Dembele to switch to the left, and probably demand Jules Kounde to provide more width from right-back, but getting Messi the ball in his preferred spot is still a key to success.

GettyNo.10 in a diamond

And now for the reshuffling.

Argentina found at the World Cup that playing three defensively-minded midfielders behind him allows Messi to work his magic in the final third, while also alleviating responsibilities off the ball. Barcelona can do much the same here, especially if Busquets stays to occupy the defensive midfield role.

There are some issues, though — mostly the fact that Messi will naturally sort of wander away from the central position he's supposed to start in. But this is also perhaps the best possible set up for creating chances in the final third.

Xavi has, after all, flirted with the idea of using Dembele as more of an inside forward than a touchline winger, and his connection with Lewandowski is only getting stronger.

This wouldn't look anything like a 'traditional' two-striker formation, but having two more recognised advanced forwards in front of the Argentine could work wonders.

Getty/GOALFalse nine (when Lewandowski is out)

Barcelona had to adjust to life without Lewandowski at the start of 2023 after the striker picked up a silly suspension. And although Xavi's side never really developed a coherent attack in his absence, the Blaugrana still managed to squeak out wins without their star striker.

In an ideal world, Barcelona won't have to think about how to compensate without Lewandowski for the next couple of seasons. He will inevitably be one of the first names on the teamsheet, and a crucial piece if Barcelona are to achieve more European success.

But should such a situation arise where he is not available, then Messi could occupy a more central area and create for Barcelona's goalscoring wingers.

He can no longer put in the yards like in his false nine glory days under Pep Guardiola's tutelage, but Messi still has a fundamental understanding of the position. Meanwhile, the quality on either wing should give Messi plenty of options to combine with.

It would be a nightmare for opposing centre-backs, too. Even a less mobile, 35-year-old Messi can still wreak havoc floating between the lines.

Keep, loan or sell? The players Barcelona should allow to leave in the 2023 summer transfer window

The Blaugrana are set to have a busy summer as they aim to clear space on their wage bill to bring in a number of new – or returning – faces

There really hasn't been much talk of who might leave Barcelona this summer. Instead, all of the attention has been focused on one arrival, with speculation running rife as to whether the Blaugrana can lure Lionel Messi back to Camp Nou.

But that is largely dependent on Barca's financial situation. While they have met La Liga president Javier Tebas' demands and cleared some salary off the books, they still need to raise some cash to address the league's supposed 'financial viability plan' in order to re-sign the club legend. That might mean one or two big-name departures, with Ansu Fati and Raphinha supposedly available for the right price.

Outside of that, there still needs to be the standard slew of outgoings. Barcelona have a few players returning from loans who they will undoubtedly look to move on again. Furthermore, there are some youngsters in the ranks who could benefit from a move away, too.

But who should be sold, who should be loaned out and who should be kept despite rumours linking them with moves away? GOAL breaks it all down…

FC BarcelonaKEEP: Ansu Fati (Unless a massive offer comes in)

Barca have reportedly gone back and forth on this one. Chatter suggests that Ansu will be allowed to leave for the right price, while Xavi has been non-committal. However, it may be in the Blaugrana's best interests to keep him around.

At just 21, with immense potential, the forward can still offer a lot. And he's shown in brief glimpses that he could yet be world-class. It is also likely that potential suitors will be put off by his injury record.

Ultimately, Barcelona need to raise money, and Ansu might not fetch a worthy return. He's also promising enough to give another shot. If a massive bid comes in, though, letting him go might be worth considering.

AdvertisementSELL: Raphinha

Barcelona have goals to hit, and Raphinha is the most obvious pathway to doing so. The Brazilian has enjoyed a solid first season in La Liga, reaching double-digit goal contributions in all competitions, while finding his feet in a new system.

Still, the Blaugrana look far better when Ousmane Dembele is on the pitch. Xavi loves the Frenchman, leaving Raphinha as little more than an expensive rotation option. A player of his quality, at a good age, can fetch a handsome fee. Barcelona might not like it, Xavi probably won't, but Raphinha should be allowed to leave.

Getty ImagesKEEP: Frenkie de Jong

This is a no-brainer. De Jong has finally found his best form at Barcelona, less than 12 months after being almost certain to leave the club. Somehow, exit rumours have stuck around, with Manchester United supposedly still interested. Tough for them. De Jong should, and will, stay in Camp Nou.

Getty ImagesSELL: Ferran Torres

He's been at Barcelona for 18 months, and it's difficult to see what, exactly, Torres brings to the club. He's not necessarily a prolific goalscorer, a consistent provider of assists, or particularly creative presence. That's not great for a player the Blaugrana imprudently dropped €55 million (£46m/$62m) on.

The good news is Torres is still young, and has shown flashes of the highly-rated player that emerged from Valencia nearly five years ago. But he doesn't fit into this side. Barca would be wise to sell.

Chloe Kelly has ice in her veins! Winners and losers as England's Euros hero steps up yet again after Lauren James' moment of madness threatened to end Lionesses' Women's World Cup dreams

Kelly netted the winning penalty in the shootout after James had seen red late on for stamping on a Nigerian opponent in Monday's last-16 clash

England survived a huge scare to make it into the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup on Monday, beating Nigeria on penalties after being reduced to 10 players during the goalless 120 minutes because of Lauren James' moment of madness. The Chelsea star saw red after stepping on Michelle Alozie in the 87th minute, but Chloe Kelly's winning spot-kick saw the Lionesses through to the last eight.

Nigeria were excellent on the night and looked the most likely to score throughout the match, Ashleigh Plumptre smashing the crossbar in the first half and forcing a strong save out of Mary Earps moments later.

England had chances, too, with Alessia Russo having a huge opportunity after a defensive error but produced the best from Chiamaka Nnadozie with her effort. The Nigeria goalkeeper also twice denied Rachel Daly, who appeared to have won a penalty until it was belatedly overturned by VAR.

There were not so many opportunities as the match went on, England struggling after being reduced to 10 by James' sending off. Instead, it would be decided on penalties, Kelly the hero when she converted to win it 4-2.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Lang Park in Brisbane…

Goal / SocialLOSER: Lauren James

What can you say? After being the absolute star of this tournament in the group stages, James had a David Beckham-esque moment of madness in Brisbane on Monday, deliberately stepping on Nigeria defender Michelle Alozie and subsequently being sent off.

It was a frustrating night for the Chelsea star, who was marked out of the game by the Super Falcons' clever plan and was completely unable to get involved. But no excuse can be made for what she did late on in this game. It was completely stupid. Still only 21 years old, she'll learn from this, for sure.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWINNER: Chloe Kelly

Kelly must be getting used to the feeling of being the hero by now. It was her extra-time goal that won England the European Championship last summer, her winning spot-kick that sealed victory in the Women's Finalissima in April, and she repeated that feat on Monday to send her country into the last eight of the Women's World Cup.

The winger showed absolute nerves of steel to smash home from 12 yards on this occasion, and it'll no doubt give her a ton of confidence moving forwards after a quiet tournament thus far.

Getty ImagesLOSER: Nigeria

Nigeria boss Randy Waldrum couldn't emphasise how proud he was of his players after the match – but he and the whole team must be devastated. The Super Falcons were the better team all night and they had the chances to win it, while restricting England to very few of their own at the other end.

But they just could not get over the line. There's no doubt that they've done their nation proud and that they've been excellent this tournament, but they must be gutted that they couldn't get over the line.

So often praised for her management throughout her two years in charge, Sarina Wiegman's in-game changes were so poor on Monday. Nigeria settled well and were the better team for almost the entirety of the game, and yet the coach waited until the final moments of the 90 minutes to make any substitutions – and when she was about to, James' red card meant they had to be altered and were always going struggle to make an impact with England down to 10.

It wasn't just about changes in personnel, either. Nigeria's press was clever and the way they marked the likes of James and Keira Walsh out of the game wasn't combatted by Wiegman at all.

This was so close to being an embarrassing exit – so, so close. Things will need to improve for the quarter-finals. Massively.

Mauricio Pochettino's latest fitness update on Lavia came ahead of Chelsea's Premier League win over Luton Town. On that occasion, he said: "He needs a few weeks to be ready to be involved with the team. He is working to try and catch his teammates. For Romeo we need to wait a few weeks."

That timeline would have given Lavia a chance of featuring after the international break, but it now appears that the Blues will be without the midfielder for an extended period of time after his injury was assessed on Friday, according to .

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Manager Mauricio Pochettino will be cursing his luck, with Benoit Badiashile, Christopher Nkunku, Wesley Fofana and Carney Chukwuemeka among the other big names currently sidelined. The Blues did at least receive a boost from Reece James recently, with the club captain posting a positive recovery update on social media.
