'Good time to give people in Pakistan one more gift' – Younis

As with all good Pakistan runs , it is to the bowling that goes much of the praise. For wicket-taking skill, their attack has a depth and incisiveness that few sides here can match

Osman Samiuddin in Johannesburg02-Oct-2009Pakistan have around them the air of favourites going into tomorrow’s semi-final against New Zealand. That is as scary a proposition for their opponents as it is for their supporters, of course, but there has been something pleasingly coherent about them in the Champions Trophy. And New Zealand, for whom meeting Pakistan in semi-finals is as much an expectation as making it to the stage, are waking up every day to a new injury concern. As with all good Pakistan runs ever, it is to the bowling that goes much of the praise. For wicket-taking skill, their attack has a depth and incisiveness that few sides here can match. From the very first bursts of the energetic Umar Gul and Mohammad Aamer, to Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal’s middle and back to the pacers at the death, right through there is the threat of wickets. Such is the strength that Mohammad Asif might sit out despite an ultimately heartening return. And the always-overlooked, but ever-ready Rao Iftikhar Anjum hasn’t even had a look-in.The dilemma, for Younis Khan, is to shape this force. The surface will force his hand; the Wanderers has generally been kind to bowlers but the surface for the semi-final is the same one as the one on which New Zealand and Sri Lanka pillaged nearly 600 runs. Should Asif stay as part of a four-man attack if the conditions are there, or should the increasingly canny spin of Ajmal be retained? Younis will not decide until he has sussed out the surface, though it is likely, the line-up that took on India will take the field.”I always try to pick team according to conditions,” he said. “Suppose there is a seaming track and I include two-three spinners? So I will see the conditions first. Until then my mind is always open and I need to see what the conditions are. There is competition for places in bowling and batting and that is a healthy sign for Pakistan.”Even the batting has not been as flimsy as the worry often is. It struggled with conditions at Centurion in the last game – as did their opponents. It struggled with conditions at Wanderers against the West Indies. But both times it held firm, for they bat fairly deep. Imran Nazir is likely to be fit again and probably will play; one big, game-changinghand is what Younis believes he can bring to this tournament and it is all he wants. That kind of non-pressure is liberating in its own way, especially for a man like Nazir. He won’t mind it in a semi-final.The captain’s own scratchiness is a greater concern. The fractured finger doesn’t help – “only I am unfit,” he laughed, when asked about the team’s health – and whatever momentum Pakistan’s openers have provided, has stalled with him at one down. He isn’t too worried, but a positional switch may not be the worst option. “I won’t put pressure on myself. The main thing is that the team wins,” he said. After that there is little unknown. New Zealand have been nothing short of remarkable here, especially with the number of first-choice players who have fallen by the wayside. They will scrap, for every run, every catch and every wicket and like Australia – but to a less intimidating degree – will not beat themselves. At some point, you feel, they must break the semi-final barrier; that they are more familiar with the Wanderers, havingplayed their last two games there, will help.If Pakistan do triumph, a first Champions Trophy final awaits them and it is an achievement not to be taken lightly. Younis’s constant refrain through this event has been the same as it was in England in June, that Pakistan, cricket and country, needs a win here. Maybe the emotion has worn a little thin – Younis even joked about how often he says it. But repetition should not take from the substance of the sentiment: a Champions Trophy final, in this year and period, a final that would have been played in Pakistan had it not been for the security situation, will still be a remarkable and touching accomplishment.”It’ll be fantastic if we reach the final. Pakistan is the only team that has not reached the final. For me as Pakistan captain, at the moment, winning the T20 World Cup and now in the semi-final: we need two more good days. If it happens, it will be fantastic for Pakistan. We need a couple of good titles because cricket is the only game in Pakistan that brings the people together. I think it’s a good time to give them one more gift.”

Sunderland: Fans react to Lee Johnson interview

Sunderland manager Lee Johnson appeared to take a slight dig at Arsenal and Tottenham following a penalty shootout win over Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday.

And a number of Black Cats supporters were quick to react to the official club post as a result.

Sunderland continued their memorable run in this season’s Carabao Cup with a dramatic victory from the spot against the Championship side.

Johnson’s side ran out 3-1 winners on penalties, and the boss was asked who he wanted in the quarter-finals in a post-match interview.

He preferred a trip to north London to face either the Gunners or Spurs in order to wait for ‘the really big guns when it’s two legs’ at the semi-final stage.

Sunderland fans react

Sunderland shared the full interview with Johnson on their official Twitter page, which is available to view here.

This is what these fans had to say in reply, with many picking out his comments on Arsenal and Spurs and one labelling it as ‘quality’.

Journalist drops Vlahovic to Spurs claim

Speaking on the Calciomercato Show, as broadcast live on CMIT TV, Italian reporter Furio Focolari has made a Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving Dusan Vlahovic.

The Lowdown: Spurs chase Serb…

Even long before the arrival of new manager Antonio Conte in what has been a whirlwind few days for the club, Tottenham managing director Fabio Paratici was allegedly trying to bring Vlahovic through the doors at N17.

Indeed, Spurs were linked with a move for the free-scoring Serbia international through the summer transfer window with reports from Italy even suggesting that they failed with a multi-million pound bid for his services (Fanta Calcio).

However, following on from the huge update recently that Vlahovic refused a new Fiorentina contract which would have made him the highest paid player in the club’s history (La Viola owner Rocco Commisso via Sky), Spurs may be in a better position to negotiate his signing.

Conte’s appointment at Spurs has only intensified reports linking the Lilywhites with another attempt to sign Vlahovic as reporter Focolari drops a live TV transfer claim.

The Latest: Vlahovic claim dropped…

Speaking to the Calciomercato Show, as broadcast live on CMIT TV, Focolari thinks the £45 million-valued star will now join Spurs instead of fellow competitors for his signature, Juventus.

“I don’t think Vlahovic will go to Juventus. I think he will go to Tottenham, given the arrival of Conte. Vlahovic is a top player. ”

The Verdict: Spurs fans wouldn’t be disappointed…

Going by his numbers and praise from Italian football critics over this season and last, it’s safe to say Spurs supporters certainly wouldn’t be disappointed by his arrival at the club.

The 21-year-old, who would come with huge sell-on value given his age and potential, has already racked up ten goals and an assist in just 12 appearances across all competitions (Transfermarkt) – he scored a stunning hat-trick just this past weekend against Spezia.

Highlighting his proficiency in front of goal, Vlahovic has averaged more shots on goal per 90 domestically this season (3.3) than any Spurs player – even last season’s PFA Team of the Year members Son Heung-min and Harry Kane (WhoScored).

He has also attracted more fouls per 90 (2.5) than any Tottenham star, indicating he is an absolute nightmare to play against and could be a real asset for Conte at Spurs with his physicality up front.

Lilywhites fans are surely hoping that Focolari is right and Vlahovic does indeed choose north London over Turin.

Impressive Australia draw level

Australia picked up the wickets of Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh to reduce the pressure of a rapid start provided by Virender Sehwag

The Bulletin by Sriram Veera02-Nov-2009
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outShane Watson took three lower-order wickets after scoring 49•Getty ImagesIt was India’s game to lose after they restricted Australia to a par total of 250 on a good batting pitch, especially after the fiery start provided by Virender Sehwag. However, Australia won the vital moments during the chase to level the series in Mohali. Like in Vadodara, Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar threatened to pull off a heist; like in Vadodara they failed. It was a roller-coaster of a chase and whenever India appeared to be getting ahead, Australia fought back with a vengeance. It wasn’t necessarily great bowling that did the trick but it was disciplined enough to force mistakes from under-pressure batsmen.India were off to a cracking start. Sehwag looted 30 runs from 14 deliveries from Mitchell Johnson but no one took ownership of the chase and India slowly lost their way. The first turning point came when Ricky Ponting introduced spin in the 17th over. Nathan Hauritz stuck in his second over, earning an lbw decision against Sachin Tendulkar but the ball appeared to be missing leg stump. The second blow occurred in the 24th over when Ponting fired a direct hit from cover to run out Yuvraj Singh. MS Dhoni took the score to 134 before he became the fifth wicket to fall, trying to clip a harmless delivery from Doug Bollinger down the leg side. Raina didn’t last long, cleaned up by Hauritz when he failed to connect with an attempted dab to third man and finally, Ravindra Jadeja ran himself out, attempting a non-existent single. There would have been a moment of apprehension for Ponting when Harbhajan and Praveen played cameos but Shane Watson, who leaked runs against the same pair in Vadodara, redeemed himself today. Harbhajan opted for the batting Powerplay after Jadeja’s exit and pushed the score to 204 but fell, scooping a return catch to Watson, who later induced Praveen to edge behind. Game over. How did India lose this one though? Sehwag and Tendulkar had provided them the ideal start and though Tendulkar’s dismissal was vital, even then, India held the advantage. Or so it seemed. Dhoni and Yuvraj, the heroes from the last game, were still in, the wicket was still batting-friendly and the bowling wasn’t too threatening. This is where the Australia, battered and bruised with injuries, showed their famed fighting spirit. They needed a moment of inspiration and it came from their captain. Ponting swooped in on a push from Dhoni at short cover and swung around to hit a direct hit at the striker’s end to catch Yuvraj short of the crease. It was the spark Australia were looking for and they began to hustle the Indians on the field. The fielding was sharp and the bowling, if not spectacular, was tight. They still needed a slice of luck to swing things decisively in their favour and they got it when Bollinger returned for his second spell in the 32nd over. It appeared to be a harmless delivery, bouncing down the leg side, but Dhoni nicked the attempted glance to the keeper.Suddenly, the momentum had shifted and India’s lower order was put under severe pressure. An alert Ponting kept making the right moves; with two left-handers Raina and Jadeja in the middle, he brought in the offspinner Hauritz for another spell. Hauritz took out a nervous Raina in the very first over and Ponting made yet another move that almost backfired on him. He gave the ball to Johnson, perhaps hoping that the errant bowler would redeem himself, but Harbhajan and Jadeja slammed a couple of boundaries. However, the pressure got to Jadeja, who was run out by who else but Ponting, and the chase had all but derailed. The final margin of victory – 24 runs – was all the more surprising because Australia appeared to have lost the advantage after being restricted to a par total. Four Australian batsmen went past 40 but none carried on for a big score and the innings meandered at times, especially in the last ten overs where they scored only 49 runs. Ponting and Watson couldn’t build on their promising partnership and the same fate befell Michael Hussey and Cameron White’s association.White played responsibly to keep Australia in the game. He has a reputation for powerful shots, but adapted his approach and scored in singles and twos. The big hits have eluded him so far in the series, reducing him to being merely a useful contributor rather than one who can take the game away from the opposition. His best shot was a well-adjusted short-arm slog sweep against Yuvraj Singh: He leaned forward to seemingly push it away for a single but at the last minute just stretched out to swat it high over midwicket. He went on to unfurl more skilful shots, when he backed away a couple of times against Harbhajan to loft inside-out against the turn, but for the main part, he drove and flicked for singles to rotate the strike. He found solid support in Hussey and the duo added 73 runs for the fourth wicket with the left-hander playing another typical innings: he was calmness personified, pushing the ball into gaps for singles and collecting an odd boundary with a cover drive or a sweep. Occasionally, he charged out to the spinners to loft them over the in-field and one such stroke off Yuvraj sailed over wide long-on for six. However, he too fell after getting a start, pulling Yuvraj straight to deep midwicket.Australia’s task was made harder by the discipline of all the bowlers except Ishant Sharma. The new-ball bowlers, Praveen and Ashish Nehra, found enough movement to keep the top order quiet and both returned to choke the batsmen in the end overs. The spinners, too, found enough bite to cover up for Ishant’s wayward spells. Harbhajan put in his best performance of the series, slowing up the pace and flighting on off and middle stump line. Harbhajan tried with the bat too but it was always going to be a tough for him to pull off the improbable.

Amol Muzumdar becomes highest run-getter in Ranji Trophy

In the remote North-East Frontier Railway Stadium in Guwahati, Amol Muzumdar became the highest run-getter in Ranji Trophy, going past another domestic giant Amarjit Kaypee’s mark of 7623 runs

Cricinfo staff06-Nov-2009In the remote North-East Frontier Railway Stadium in Guwahati, Amol Muzumdar became the highest run-getter in the Ranji Trophy, going past another domestic giant Amarjit Kaypee’s mark of 7623 runs.At the start of the 2009-10 season, Muzumdar needed 31 runs to break the record, but once Mumbai, his home side, didn’t pick him for the preparatory tournaments, he moved to Assam. Muzumdar made 22 in the first innings against Rajasthan, and crossed the record in the second effort of 25, a knock that couldn’t help Assam avoid a 95-run defeat. In his previous season for Mumbai, Muzumdar scored 359 runs in nine matches at an average of 27.61. In the semi-final last year, he was sent in to open the innings after Mumbai had ensured they would go through to the finals. Presumably given the opportunity to get the record, he managed 2 off 13 and 9 off 32. In what was a sign of things to come, he was not played in the final, which Mumbai won.The recent happenings, though, should not take away from a career, which could have easily gone down the bitter road. Muzumdar was one of the many middle-order batsmen born in the wrong era, that of Mohammad Azharuddin, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly. He began his first-class career with an unbeaten 260 against Haryana in the 1994-95 Ranji pre-quarterfinal, and kept putting up the runs for Mumbai season after season. He went on to win seven Ranji titles with Mumbai, the one in 2006-07 as captain, after the side came from nowhere and stunned everybody in the last few matches.

Crystal Palace linked to Reyes Cleary

Crystal Palace have been linked with a transfer move for West Bromwich Albion striker Reyes Cleary as the January transfer window fast approaches.

What’s the story?

According to the Daily Mail, the Eagles are one of a number of sides interested in securing the highly-rated 17-year-old’s services, with several Premier League and Bundesliga clubs listed amongst his potential suitors.

The report states that: “Cleary has been compared in style to a young Romelu Lukaku. He is quick, strong and has a goalscorer’s instinct and, as Sportsmail reported, has already been drawing interest from Crystal Palace, Schalke, Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim.”

German giants Bayern Munich and the newest members of football’s financial elite Newcastle United are also believed to be tracking Cleary ahead of a potential offer, meaning Palace chairman Steve Parish may have to move quickly in order to secure his target.

He’s just what Patrick Vieira needs

Cleary has been in sensational form in the opening weeks of the current campaign, finding the back of the net on 14 occasions in just 12 appearances after bagging another brace against Leicester City last weekend.

It’s believed that Munich sent a contingency to watch the stocky striker in action against Stoke City Under-23s last month and are planning on further scouting missions as interest in him continues to grow.

But with Cleary yet to sign a professional contract, an imminent Hawthorns exit could be on the cards, and the youngster may be just what Patrick Vieira needs at Palace.

The French tactician has made a successful start to his squad rebuild in south London, bringing in Odsonne Edouard from Celtic in order to bolster his forward line.

However, with both Christian Benteke and Jordan Ayew approaching the twilight years of their careers and Jean-Philippe Mateta failing to impress, Vieira is expected to delve back into the transfer market for further attacking reinforcements.

As a result, Cleary could be the ideal addition for the capital club. The teenage prodigy has been compared to Lukaku, would arrive for a relatively small fee, and has plenty of room to grow while Edouard continues to lead the line.

It remains to be seen whether Parish can convince the Englishman to join Vieira’s revolution at Palace, but it’s a deal that would signal the Eagles’ intentions in the years ahead.

And, in other news…61 duels won, 25 tackles: Palace “warrior” has been Vieira’s unsung hero this season

West Indies look to upset England in final ODI

The West Indies women’s team is confident of beating England in the final ODI to clinch the series 2-1

Cricinfo staff07-Nov-2009West Indies women have fancied their chances of winning the final ODI against England in St Kitts and taking the series 2-1. Their coach, the former opener Sherwin Campbell, said the team was upbeat ahead of the final match at Warner Park and were confident of an upset.”We now have the final ODI on Saturday and I believe we have a realistic chance of beating England and winning the series,” he said. “There is self-belief in this team and a lot of confidence.”West Indies won the first ODI by 40 runs and narrowly lost the second by 13 runs. The loss on Thursday led England to level the series one all. Rainford-Brent made 72 opening the batting and had solid support from Jenny Gunn, who was promoted to No. 3 and scored 57, as England reached 232 for 5 having chosen to bat first. Stafanie Taylor proved a handful with the ball, collecting 3 for 29 from her ten overs, but she was unable to carry that momentum into the West Indies innings when she was the first out for 2.West Indies were unable to chase despite a cautious 57 from opener Pamela Lavine. Merissa Aguilleira kept the scorecard ticking with her 44 but was run out by Holly Colvin in the 46th over.Campbell was pleased with his team’s effort despite the loss. “On Thursday we could not complete the job but I thought we played well,” he said. “There was a bit of panic there at the end and I felt our inexperience at this level is what beat us.”

Liverpool fans unhappy with Gomez update

A number of Liverpool fans are unhappy with Jurgen Klopp’s injury update on Joe Gomez, with some even calling for the centre-back to be sold.

The 24-year-old has suffered cruel luck with injuries in recent years, with persistent serious problems halting his progress.

Gomez’s 2020/21 was effectively ruined by a knee injury picked up on England international duty last autumn and he hasn’t been able to force his way back into Klopp’s plans since.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375258″]

The defender has been limited to just 13 minutes of Premier League action so far this season and is currently sidelined through injury once again, seemingly behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate even when fully fit.

Klopp has now provided an update on the Englishman [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], saying he doesn’t expect him to be available for at least another “few weeks.”

Tottenham: Spurs ‘really serious’ on Rudiger

Tottenham are ‘really serious’ about signing Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Spurs after a centre-back?

Tottenham have five senior centre-backs on the books at this moment in time, with Conte opting to use left-back Ben Davies as one of three centre-backs in his first two games in charge.

Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga are yet to feature under Conte, with the new boss reportedly making an A-list centre-back a top priority.

Inter Milan’s Stefan de Vrij is one name that has been linked with Spurs, and it seems as if Rudiger could be another who the club go after in the winter window.

The Latest: Jones’ claim

Jones was talking to Give Me Sport regarding Rudiger in a story shared on Monday evening.

He simply said:

“They’re really serious about Rudiger.”

The Verdict: Similar to Conte?

Tottenham will need to do a lot of persuading in order to bring the Germany international across London, in what could be a situation similar to Conte.

The Italian rejected a move to Spurs over the summer but has since had second thoughts and replaced Nuno Espirito Santo earlier this month.

Rudiger has also recently snubbed a move to Tottenham, rejecting both Spurs and West Ham last year, so Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici may need to work their magic once again for Rudiger to have a change of heart.

Perhaps the offer of a long-term contract and guarantees over playing time could persuade Rudiger, described as ‘phenomenal’ by Rio Ferdinand, especially with his Stamford Bridge contract expiring in the summer at this moment in time.

In other news: Conte and Paratici want to ‘mock’ rivals by signing ‘incredible’ record-breaking beast for Spurs.

Assam call the shots against Andhra

A round-up of the first day’s play from the semi-finals of the Ranji Trophy Plate League 2009-10

Cricinfo staff15-Dec-2009Scorecard
A tight spell from offspinner Arlen Konwar restricted Andhra to 212 for 9 at stumps against Assam at Guwahati. The visitors’ decision to bat first was initially vindicated by the top-order batsmen. Prasad Reddy and Avadhanam Rakesh combined forces in a second-wicket stand that yielded 72 before legspinner Sairaj Bahutule trapped Reddy in front after a stroke-filled fifty. Venugopal Rao then helped the resolute Rakesh add a further 59 after which Andhra suffered a middle-order collapse. Dhiraj Goswami’s dismissal of Rao was the cue for Konwar to take centre-stage as he nipped out three important wickets without conceding too many runs. Andhra captain Bodapati Sumanth resisted briefly before Konwar sent him back after Andhra had passed 200. Assam will look to pick the last wicket quickly and drive home the early advantage on day two. Andhra on the other hand will want to capitalize on the sharp turn on offer, that is set to gradually increase as the match progresses.Scorecard
Honours were even at stumps on the first day between Haryana and Tripura at Rohtak. Haryana opener Nitin Saini anchored the start of the innings through steady partnerships of 32 and 57 for the first two wickets. His 59 was punctuated by six hits to the fence and one over it before he became first-change bowler Timir Chanda’s second wicket. Manav Sharma then took over the role of holding one end up with a knock of 42 that came at a languid strike-rate of 24 before Chanda dismissed him with stumps in sight. Haryana will hope that Sachin Rana and the tail can ensure that the hard work done on the first day bears fruit on the second.
