Mountaineers get the better of Rhinos

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMountaineers registered a convincing 55-run win over Mid West Rhinos in the Logan Cup match at Kwekwe Sports Club.Although Mountaineers dominated the first innings of the match, taking a 69-run first-innings lead, Rhinos did have a chance to make a comeback. A five-wicket haul by Graeme Cremer in the second innings helped Rhinos restrict Mountaineers to 216 – that meant a target of 285, with nearly two days of play left in the game.Rhinos, however, lost their way after a 48-run opening partnership between Vusi Sibanda and Jaik Mickleburgh was broken by fast bowler Shingi Masakadza – he had Sibanda bowled. By the time Mickleburgh was dismissed for 43, Mountaineers’ bowlers had made significant inroads, reducing the Rhinos to 101 for 5.A sixth-wicket partnership of 57 runs between Cremer and Mluleki Nkala gave Rhinos some hope, but once Cremer was dismissed for 29, Nkala ran out of partners and Rhinos folded for 230.

Bangladesh eye series-levelling win

Big Picture

The second-ODI washout may have disturbed the flow of the series, but for Bangladesh it has comes as a welcome opportunity. Bangladesh have never been alive in a series in Sri Lanka going into the third match, but this time they are just a win away from squaring it.They have batted well in patches, Tamim Iqbal’s century and the excellent finish from Nasir Hossain being the bright spots. But this is a big game where the three senior batsmen – Mohammad Ashraful, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah – need to step up. Ashraful and Mushfiqur got out in the middle of a mini-collapse in the first ODI while Mahmudullah showed signs of some form . He gave it away after tickling one to the wicketkeeper, but till that point he had batted soundly.Bowling is Bangladesh’s main worry. The pace bowlers were clobbered in a confidence-sapping outing in the first ODI. They cut down on the number of seamers in the second ODI using allrounder Ziaur Rahman as a new-ball bowler. The spinners will give them the best chance of winning, although it goes against the grain at Pallekele. For Sri Lanka, a win is of paramount importance given the circumstances surrounding the players. The team has so far fended off questions about their participation in the IPL, but it is a much talked-about issue. The only way to regain focus would be by winning the series. It is a test for captain Angelo Mathews to keep his eyes set on beating a lower-ranked side and Bangladesh’s current improvement is likely to keep them honest to the job at hand.

In the spotlight

It has not been a great tour for young Anamul Haque but he has come to the senior team with the tag of “young and hungry”. His only Test appearance was disappointing while in the first ODI, Anamul looked good in bits. Much is expected from him, especially after the century he hit in only his second ODI.The excitement surrounding Kusal Perera is bourgeoning with every shot in his repertoire. But there’s more to him than just playing like Sanath Jayasuriya. He was expected to play a long innings at some point in this series, given the triple and double hundred he struck in two of the three innings before this series.

Team news

Mathews didn’t hint at many changes ahead of the second ODI and he played with an unchanged line-up from the first game. It is likely to remain the same this time too.Sri Lanka (probable): 1. Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2. Kusal Janith Perera, 3. Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4. Dinesh Chandimal, 5. Lahiru Thirimanne, 6. Angelo Mathews (c), 7. Jeevan Mendis, 8. Thisara Perera, 9. Nuwan Kulasekara, 10. Sachithra Senanayake, 11. Lasith MalingaBangladesh didn’t pick a line-up that suited the Hambantota wicket for the second ODI and it is likely they would go with the team’s strength in Pallekele too. In other words, avoid the weakness (read pace bowling).Bangladesh (probable): 1. Anamul Haque, 2. Jahurul Islam, 3. Mohammad Ashraful, 4. Mushfiqur Rahim (c & wk), 5. Mahmudullah, 6. Mominul Haque, 7. Nasir Hossain, 8. Ziaur Rahman, 9. Sohag Gazi, 10. Abdur Razzak, 11. Rubel Hossain

Pitch and conditions

The top five ODI wicket-takers in Pallekele are pace bowlers but the Bangladesh management has expressed confidence in its strength, i.e., spin bowling. The weather for the second game of the series offers encouraging signs, but it has rained in the surrounding areas over the last few days.

Stats & Trivia

  • Among the top eight wicket-takers in Sri Lanka-Bangladesh encounters, none of them are playing in this series. Nuwan Kulasekara and Abdur Razzak have taken 14 wickets each, among the current bowlers.
  • Tamim Iqbal’s 112 was the highest individual score for a Bangladesh batsman in Sri Lanka and the team’s 259 runs was also the highest in this country.

Quotes

“We can’t win the series, but at the same time, we can prevent a series loss.”

“I feel it is a good challenge for us, because we haven’t won the series yet.”

Now or never again for Rogers

Arthur Coningham, Ken Eastwood, Mick Malone. Three names that are part of a club that Chris Rogers is in danger of joining: the Australian one-Test wonders. All three enjoyed fine first-class careers but were never given the chance on the international stage. At 35 it is quite perceivable that Rogers will end his career with the same footnote. It will be quite puzzling if Rogers never plays another Test. He was considered good enough to break into the Australian side, then the world’s No. 1, in 2008, but four years later continues to be overlooked for a side struggling for runs.Rogers reels off the names of players preferred to him since his only Test in Perth. None of them get close to his near-19,000 first-class runs at a shade under 50.”It has always felt like there’s always been someone else who has come in to take that available spot,” Rogers told ESPNcricinfo. “Whether it’s a Katich or a Cowan or a Hughes. There’s always been someone else. It all comes down to opportunity and it would be nice to have had more than one Test to show people that I can play.”He can most certainly play. Last summer he passed 1,000 runs in an English season for the sixth time (he has passed the mark in two Australian seasons). His 1,086 runs at 40.22 led Middlesex to third place in the County Championship – their best finish since 1995.He cannot be shouting louder in the ears of the Australian selectors. But they continue to allow his case to pass over them. They selected Rob Quiney – only five years Rogers’ junior but with fifty fewer first-class centuries – against South Africa before Christmas. And he was allowed to have a go in two Tests.Selections like Quiney’s are a killer to Rogers who can do no more than keep the mobile phone charged up. “It’s hard to keep getting excited about the prospect of a recall because I have waited a few years for a phone call and it hasn’t come,” he said. “The selectors have gone in a different direction and there are only so many times you can get your hopes up.”But maybe this summer Rogers will be too hard to ignore. Australia’s top-order batting has consistently failed and a proven run-producer is sitting waiting on the shores to which they will tour. John Inverarity, the Australian chairman of selectors, has said Rogers will be seriously considered. Surely cause for positivity?”I’m not sure if positive is the right word,” Rogers said. “I think there’s a chance. Guys who’ve had the opportunity over the past couple of years haven’t really nailed their spot and that has maybe left the door a little bit ajar.”Omission from the Ashes would almost certainly bring a final slump of the shoulders from Rogers, who averages just 0.33-of-a-run below Justin Langer in first-class cricket. If it is not meant to be Rogers can concentrate on helping Middlesex complete their transformation. When he joined the club in 2011, they were at a particularly low ebb having finished second-bottom of the Championship the year before. But his runs rallied them back into Division One and last season’s third sees them installed as contenders for the title in 2013.A tonic for international disappointment perhaps? “As you get older the desire to win things comes much greater and to captain a side – which two years ago was struggling – to a Championship would be something I could be very proud of. But playing for your country is still the ultimate.”

Fans call for publication of BCCI's probe report

A group of Indian fans, in a bid to help clean up the game, have requested BCCI vice-president Arun Jaitley to publish the unedited probe report that will be submitted on Monday at the BCCI working committee meeting in Delhi. In a letter, the fans have asked for the report – put together by the two-man team assigned to investigate allegations of betting and spot-fixing in IPL – to be posted on the BCCI website, saying it would be “disappointing if BCCI decides not to publish it”.The letter, penned by Vijay Navaratnam and signed by 43 others, went on to ask for a secure email address through which the public could contact and provide evidence to the two-member investigation committee, comprised of retired Tamil Nadu High Court judges R Balasubramanian and T Jayaram Chouta. The letter referred to “video clips/photos/copies of emails in the media that show Mr Meiyappan is a formal member of Chennai Super Kings”.In its third point, the letter suggested a governance review of the BCCI. “We dare say the current sorry saga occurred precisely due to BCCI’s poor governance. Poor governance and corruption are interrelated,” the letter read. There was also a call to appoint BCCI directors who are independent of state associations to ensure there is no conflict of interest, and “to bring meaningful debate and fair decision-making into the BCCI boardroom”.

CA denies Nine's selection influence

Channel Nine will not be picking Australia’s cricket teams nor dictating their schedule over the term of the network’s new $400 million broadcast rights deal, Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland has said.Having been pushed to the top of the market by a bold Network Ten bid for all cricket in Australia, Nine clearly expect value for money. Their managing director Jeff Browne told a business lunch in Sydney on Wednesday that there would be “a lot more discussion” of team selection and scheduling between CA and the broadcaster from next summer, particularly around the matter of player rotation.”I understand why sports want to do that but people at home want to see the best players playing and we urge Cricket Australia to pick the best players every time,” Browne said. “I think we’ve got a better understanding on that. Last year that balance was skewed too much in favour of resting some players so from now on there will be a lot more discussion between CA and the broadcaster about that.”The issue of senior Australian players being rested and rotated during the limited overs portion of the summer was a particular sore point with Nine last season. ESPNcricinfo reported in January that the CA team performance manager Pat Howard had two meetings with Nine’s director of sport Steve Crawley and members of the commentary team during the Sydney Test to explain why Michael Clarke, David Warner and Matthew Wade were to be rested and Michael Hussey dropped.Browne was clearly of the view that such discussions would become more consultative than merely explanatory in the future, but Sutherland was adamant that the national selectors would not be unduly influenced by the commercial demands of broadcasters, no matter how much they were paying to provide television coverage.”Cricket has a long-standing and successful relationship with the Nine Network but team selections and scheduling are matters for Cricket Australia,” Sutherland said. “The National Selection Panel selects the Australian teams. With the volume of international cricket being played, it will continue to be necessary for us to manage player workloads appropriately.”We’ll continue to consult with our broadcasters on scheduling issues. It’s something we have always done. We have a common goal with our broadcast partners to maximise the number of fans watching and enjoying cricket. We’ll consider all ideas and then make the appropriate decisions.”Following the Sydney meetings, Nine and CA were engaged in a public slanging match after the stand-in ODI captain George Bailey responded to suggestions he was leading a “B-team” by contending that it was in Nine’s interests to talk the game down somewhat as it entered broadcast negotiations. This drew a furious response from the network’s executive producer of cricket, Brad McNamara.”Nowhere has Channel Nine ever talked the one-day game down, nowhere have we ever said this is a ‘B team’,” McNamara told an Australian radio station. “It’s rubbish and George should stick to playing cricket and leave rights to the people who know what they’re talking about. I reckon he’s got his hands full as it is. He needs to concentrate on staying in the side.”And he needs to understand where his money’s coming from. Without the TV rights deal, George is probably working in a coal mine or flipping burgers at McDonald’s. All this talk about the death of one-day cricket, it’s not coming from us. Given we were lacking star quality, we were very happy [with the ratings].”At the announcement of the broadcast deal, Nine’s chief executive David Gyngell had rejected suggestions the network would seek assurances that rotations would be reduced. “No, I don’t have those political discussions with James,” he said. “I don’t agree with the rotation policy, but not enough to not buy the cricket. That’s up to James to sort out.”

Roderick shines in familiar surrounds

Gareth Roderick justified his promotion in Gloucestershire’s batting order by scoring 71 as the hosts gained a first innings lead of 144 over Worcestershire at Cheltenham.Starting the second day on 83 without loss in reply to 182, Gloucestershire were bowled out for 326, Chris Dent making 79 and Alex Gidman 62. Gareth Andrew was the most successful bowler with 3 for 56. By the close Worcestershire had progressed to 31 without loss in their second innings and trailed by 113.Roderick, who earned a Gloucestershire contract by scoring more than 1,000 runs in a season for Cheltenham Cricket Club in the West of England Premier League, relished being back in the town. The 21-year-old South African wicketkeeper-batsman was given a chance at No. 3, rather than his customary middle-order position, when skipper Michael Klinger fell for 36, caught at point off a delivery that seemed to stop on him, with the total on 101.Dent, unbeaten on 56 overnight, looked aggrieved to be judged stumped trying to sweep Moeen Ali, having hit 13 fours in his 114-ball innings. At 129 for 2, Gloucestershire were still 53 runs adrift. But Roderick was set by then and found a reliable partner in Gidman as the home side moved into the lead before lunch, which was taken on 193 for 2. Gidman was first to his half-century in the afternoon session, off 76 balls, with seven fours, but his young partner lost nothing by comparison.Roderick hit seven boundaries of his own in progressing to fifty off 107 deliveries and it was Gidman who went after a stand of 105, caught behind by Ben Cox, diving to his right, off Alan Richardson. That was 234 for 3 and 28 more runs were added before Roderick was taken at slip by Daryl Mitchell, edging a ball from off-spinner Ali. The crestfallen batsman had to drag himself off, having set his sights on a Cheltenham century. Before a run was added Benny Howell was run out by Alexei Kervezee’s throw, attempting a single as Hamish Marshall played a delivery to backward point. Marshall contributed 20, but when he was bowled to give seamer Graeme Cessford his first Championship wicket Gloucestershire went on to lose their last four wickets for 25, Andrew claiming all but one of them in a spell of 3 for 15 from College Lawn End. Gidman was left unbeaten on 37.Worcestershire openers Mitchell and Matthew Pardoe survived 18 overs to the close with few alarms.

'Desperate to score runs' – Shakib

Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh allrounder who is playing for the Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League, has said he is enjoying the success with the ball, but he is “desperate to score some runs”. Shakib bowled a destructive spell of 6 for 6 in the match against the Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel, but is yet to taste success with the bat and has scores of 5, 1 and 1 from his three innings.”If you told me I could take five wickets or score a hundred, I would take the hundred any day,” Shakib said. “I am more satisfied getting runs than wickets. I am an allrounder, but I always prefer scoring runs more than my bowling so I am more desperate than anyone else right now I guess.”Shakib’s poor form with the bat has followed him from England, where he was part of Leicestershire team in the FLT20, and managed 146 runs from nine innings with a best of 43. In his last match, Shakib’s bowling spell skittled T&T out for 52, but he managed only 1 in the chase, playing on a Fidel Edwards delivery, and his wicket left the team in a precarious position at 36 for 5.”In that situation I needed to bat. The plan was to see off Fidel because he was getting wickets and I played a rash shot,” he said. “I could have left that ball easily because we were not chasing 150, 160 runs so I was frustrated with myself, not anything else.”Shakib, however, was happy with his bowling after registering the second-best T20 bowling figures. “I guess I was a bit lucky because you can’t get six wickets every day in a T20 game,” he said. “Bowling four overs, getting six wickets, once in a blue moon you may get it but I’ll take it.”Barbados Tridents have not been affected by Shakib’s lack of form with the bat and have registered three wins out of three in the tournament.

Mascarenhas admits batting failures

Hampshire captain Dimitri Mascarenhas admitted his side “just didn’t turn up” after they were beaten by Surrey in the semi-final of the Friends Life t20 at Edgbaston.Hampshire, the champions in 2010 and 2012, struggled to an under par total of 142 before Surrey reached their target with four wickets in hand and four balls to spare. But though Hampshire’s bowlers donated nine wides, Mascarenhas put the blame for defeat squarely on the shoulders of his batsmen.”Our batters just didn’t bat well enough,” he said. “We just didn’t get enough runs. In T20, one mistake can kill you and we made a lot mistakes out there today. It’s hard to defend 140 in a semi-final. 160 was about par, but we lost three wickets in the first six overs and that cost us.”The result saw Surrey, who last won the trophy in 2003, qualify for their first T20 final since 2004.They made hard work of their modest chase, though. Despite little pressure from the run-rate, several of the batsmen picked out fielders in the deep – Glenn Maxwell, who found out long-off, and Jason Roy, who hit the ball straight to deep midwicket were particularly culpable – while Azhar Mahmood, turning like an oil tanker, was run-out having been sent back.Eventually Zander de Bruyn, with a calm innings of 41 off 40 balls, and Zafar Ansari, with an intelligent innings of 21 from 12 balls, took Surrey over the line in an unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 33 in three overs. With 17 required from the final 11 balls, Ansari drove a straight six and then a straight four off the bowling of Chris Wood to all but seal the contest. The architects of the Surrey victory were their bowlers, though. Mahmood bowled his four overs for the cost of only nine runs and, having opened the innings with a maiden, did not concede a run until his 12th delivery.Hampshire, who did not score a run until the 10th ball of their innings, appeared rattled by the sluggish start and, in attempting to up the rate, lost three wickets in the first six overs to a variety of desperate strokes.Jade Dernbach, who claimed wickets with the final two deliveries of the quarter-final against Somerset, took another with his first in this game – James Vince missing a drive – and struck another big blow at the end of his first over when Neil McKenzie attempted to swing him into the leg side and was adjudged, perhaps a little harshly, leg before. Only Sean Ervine, who made 47, flourished for any length of time.”Our bowlers were outstanding,” Surrey’s stand-in captain Vikram Solanki said afterwards. “We put ourselves under pressure with the bat, but Ansari was brilliant.”

Sammy delighted with top-five Test ranking

Darren Sammy, the West Indies Test captain, has expressed delight at seeing West Indies reach the top-five in Test rankings for the first time since August 2000. West Indies, who have won their previous six Tests, currently sit on 99 points, with Australia just ahead on 101, and Pakistan lagging slightly behind on 97.This ranking came about largely because of the drawn series between Pakistan and Zimbabwe that concluded yesterday with Zimbabwe’s first Test victory against major opposition in 12 years. Before the series, Pakistan were ranked No. 4.”One of our goals has always been to be in the top five by 2015,” Sammy said. “As a Test team, we have worked really hard in the last three years and to achieve that goal two years early is a plus for us.”We now have to continue working harder in order for us to keep moving forward. Massive praise must go to our head coach Ottis Gibson and his staff for creating the atmosphere where we as players can go out and work hard for each other and our fans in the Caribbean and everywhere else.”This is a massive step in the right direction and we will continue to strive for excellence for the cause of putting West Indies cricket back on top of World cricket. The journey continues.”West Indies’ next assignment is a tour of India beginning on October 31, which will consist of two Tests and three ODIs. Following that, West Indies will travel to New Zealand for three Tests, five ODIs and two T20Is.The last time a Caribbean side toured New Zealand was in 2008-09, when they drew the Test series 0-0.
